bootsy_collins_2014UDPATE 5/9: Bootsy Collins has canceled his appearance at Asheville High School. His performance at LEAF is still on. From the press release:

“Due to mechanical issues with our bus, we are unable to make it to our event tonight. We will gladly look to come back for another festival and spend the day with the kids, like we had planned for today. Keep the Funk Alive. We’ll be sure to come back, because we give a funk!,” according to tour manager Earl Ciccel.

Boosty & the Funk Unity Band will not be arriving to the Asheville area in time to make the #iGIVEaFunk presentation or workshop at Asheville High School that was scheduled for tonight. They will be at LEAF Festival Saturday night as planned.

LEAF Community Arts extends its regrets to the wonderful people of Asheville and the Asheville City Schools and High School community, who were so supportive of making this happen.

UPDATE: LEAF organizers, and the school system, are clarifying that this concert is a private show, not open to the public. To further clarify, the information below came from the city schools. To wit:

This event on Friday is NOT a performance or concert. Bootsy & the some of the members of the original Rubber Band will be sharing their passion for the legacy of Funk with Asheville City Schools parents and families.

This is not open to the general public. We are inviting Asheville City Schools families to attend. We are hoping our press partners will cover the event and share the experience in a follow up article.

ORIGINAL POST: Here’s the note to Asheville HS and SILSA families today:

This Friday, May 9 at 6pm, Asheville High School is hosting a very special presentation from LEAF Schools & Streets. Bootsy Collins and the Funk Unity Band, who are headlining the LEAF Festival later this week, will be bringing the “I Give a Funk” campaign to Asheville youth and families.

Bootsy Collins is one of the greatest Funk, Rhythm & Blues bassist and bandleaders of all time. Bootsy and the band will present an interactive showcase, designed just for Asheville City Schools’ families. We cordially invites you to be a part of this creative arts movement, meant to inspire everyone to STOP, LISTEN and Stand UP for one another.

So come and hear and be a part of Bootsy’s inspirational message this Friday, May 9, at 6pm in the Asheville High Auditorium. We encourage you to bring the whole family. The doors will open at 5:30 for seating and the program will start at 6.

Rock! Collins will be in Asheville this weekend to play LEAF.

Hey baby bubba. The Pinnochio theory. If you fake the funk you’re nose will grow.

Indeed . . . open to the public, or do you have to be a current student or family member?
