Crossfit Asheville celebrated its fifth anniversary recently with a little party, and I want to take a minute to congratulate owners Shanna and Corey Duvall and Randy Kite.

Readers of this blog know that I’ve been an unabashed fan of Crossfit since I joined four years ago. I’ve always been a bit of a gym rat, but for several years leading up to joining Crossfit, I was flailing away with some swimming and jogging on a treadmill. I was not advancing my health in any significant way – just treading water.

I can already hear the jokes and jabs about Crossfit, and all I can describe is what I know from my experience. And here it is: an incredibly intelligent and well-schooled group of coaches urging people of all physical capabilities to be the best that they can be. The exercise has given me new-found confidence to take on challenges I would never otherwise consider. I’ve watched people’s bodies change for the stronger and better before my eyes. And I’ve experienced the accompanying emotional benefit of regular, challenging exercise. (Not to get all Asheville on y’all, but the mind and body are inextricably connected.)

And the “people,” the gym members, are an incredibly supportive community and great cross-section of Asheville. I work out next to doctors and real estate brokers and artists and personal coaches. I feel incredibly blessed to have met Shanna and Corey and Randy, and my regular classmates and all the others who have come through.

I think Crossfit Asheville is the best gym in town, and I’m not afraid to say it. Crossfit Asheville was here first, and it’s the best. It’s fascinating, and fun, to watch the Crossfit brand grow and evolve, but Crossfit to me will always be Shanna and Corey and Randy and my workout crew. All I can say is thank you, for everything.
