A community concert hosted by pianist David Troy Francis and featuring several Asheville-area performing artists will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Diana Wortham Theatre. Proceeds from the concert will benefit a new fresco at Haywood Street Congregation.
Francis returns to Asheville to artistically direct and perform in this concert because of his admiration for the Haywood Street congregation, their service to the community and the fresco. Performers include poet Glenis Redmond; an Asheville Community Theatre musical group directed by Jerry Crouch; Lau Ren, singer; Kimberly Cann, pianist; Drayton & The Dreamboats, electric violin band; Carol Duermit, singer; Andre’ Ellerby, singer; J. Franklin Keel, cellist; percussionists directed by Matthew Richmond; Jordan Scheffer, singer; Brian Seaton, oboe; Simone Vigilante, soprano; the Pastyme community choir; dance Jake Stainback; and a 100-member volunteer chorus directed by Dr. Melodie Galloway.
The Haywood Street Congregation is an urban ministry located at 297 Haywood Street, Asheville, NC. It is a nonprofit organization and home to the Downtown Welcome Table serving nearly 800 meals per week. It’s also home to the Haywood Street Respite, which provides a safe place for homeless adults to stay on a short-term basis after a hospital stay or outpatient surgery, as well as the Haywood Street Gardens and God’s Outfitters Clothing Closet.
The fresco is the newest component of the ministry. “Affirming sacred worth, restoring human dignity, and sabotaging the shame of poverty, the Haywood Street Fresco announces, in pigment and plaster, that you matter,” a press release states. Worship services are Wednesdays at 12:30 and Sundays at 3:15. www.haywoodstreet.org
