Another disturbing accident early in the new year.

Dean Floyd Bush, 45, a chronically homeless local man, was hit by at least three vehicles in the accident that killed him on Monday night. He was struck repeatedly in the road before being dragged several miles by a driver who did not know she was dragging Bush’s body.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

From the Asheville Citizen-Times:

He was struck shortly before 7 p.m. Monday by a car traveling west on Tunnel Road near the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to police. The vehicle that initially hit Bush was driving in the westbound left lane and knocked the victim into the westbound right lane.

When Bush landed in the roadway, he was possibly hit by two vehicles before the minivan struck him. The drivers of two of the vehicles stopped to check on the man.

Karen Shuler, who was driving the first vehicle that struck Bush, said she didn’t see the man until the collision. It was dark and raining at the time.

“He just came out in front of me,” she said. “It was completely dark.”

It was just a matter of seconds before the other vehicles, headed in the same direction just west of the parkway, struck the man as he was lying in the road, Shuler said.

“It was just one right after the other,” she said.

Shuler said she watched as the minivan kept going.

“We tried to find the body and it wasn’t there,” she said. “I figured the third car that hit him was dragging him. It was quite horrible.”

The driver of the minivan declined comment on Tuesday. After driving over and dragging Bush she continued on Tunnel Road before heading west on I-240, according to police. She exited the interstate at Charlotte Street and stopped at the Executive Suites business offices, believing she had a flat tire.

No charges have been filed in the case. Police ask if anyone saw a small white passenger vehicle in the area (Tunnel Road near the parkway intersection) Monday evening that may have turned onto the parkway after hitting Bush.
