Press release here:

CAROLINA PUBLIC PRESS, an online investigative news journal covering Western North Carolina, has been awarded a $14,000 grant by the McCormick Foundation’s New Media Women Entrepreneurs initiative.

CAROLINA PUBLIC PRESS is one of four women-led public-service news projects selected by McCormick to develop initiatives in the coming year. Winners were chosen from 227 proposals received in the fifth year of the grant program.

“We’re so honored that the McCormick Foundation selected Carolina Public Press for this national recognition,” said Angie Newsome, editor and founder of CAROLINA PUBLIC PRESS. “Their support means our non-profit news organization can produce even more in-depth, investigative news that matters for the entire region.”

Newsome launched CAROLINA PUBLIC PRESS in February 2011 with a mission of reporting on the overlooked and under-reported people, places and issues facing the 17 westernmost counties of North Carolina. Since its launch, the non-profit independent news site has produced special reports on topics ranging from the regional impact of state budget cuts to food policy and hardship, conducted community training workshops on public records access, and formed collaborative reporting partnerships with other media outlets across North Carolina.

The McCormick New Media Women Entrepreneurs initiative addresses opportunity and innovation, recruitment and retention for women in journalism by spotlighting their ingenuity and entrepreneurial abilities. Funding is provided by the Chicago-based Robert R. McCormick Foundation and administered by J-Lab, a center of the School of Communication at American University. Since 2008, the McCormick initiative has funded 18 projects from more than 1,800 applicants.
