blue_kudzu_2013The good folks at Blue Kudzu Sake in Asheville report that they expect to have their federal permits in hand next week, with state permits arriving in early December. The first rice delivery to Blue Kudzu is scheduled for mid-December, which will all set the stage for Blue Kudzu to then start brewing its own sake. Blue Kudzu hopes to have some Namazake ready by late January or early February. (As an aside, the good folks at Ben’s Tune-Up tell Mountain Xpress that they will start making their own sake this week. It will be made with American rice and will be called Ben’s All American Sake.)

In the meantime, Blue Kudzu wants folks to know about the sake classes and tastings it offers every Tuesday in its Depot Street tasting room. More:

Each class is taught by one of the 3 Certified Sake Professionals that we have on staff. The Certified Sake Professional (C.S.P.) program is sanctioned by the Japanese Sake Council and is the foremost Sake education program on the planet. Basically the program is the Sake equivalent of the Court of Master Sommelier program. The C.S.P. title has been bestowed upon only around 1,000 people on the entire planet, and we have 3 of them on staff here at Blue Kudzu, who gladly share their knowledge and experience with our guests. Our classes are held on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm. The classes last about an hour and a half, and include a multimedia lecture/presentation, and are concluded with a Sake tasting.

Classes are $35 and include a few small plates/snacks, the class, as well as a special tasting flight which exhibits what was learned in the class.

Classes include: A Sake tasting, educational presentation, Q&A session, as well as an appetizer sampler to nibble on. Classes are limited to 12 seats per class, and reservations are strongly suggested. Classes fill up quickly, so call now to reserve your seat.

Classes are broken down into 4 sections, and are taught on a rotating schedule. Classes must be completed in succession as each class builds on the subject matter of the previous classes. At this time we are offering:

Sake 101 – Basic overview of the world of Sake, Sake history, traditions, etc.
Sake 102 – Intensive history and the brewing process
Sake 103 – Exploration of styles, regionality, history continued, modern market conditions
Sake 104 – Regionality, rice types, yeast, and intensive tasting exploration

Our current upcoming class schedule:

Sake 103: Nov 26th
Sake 104: December 10th

Additional classes will be announced as they are scheduled.

For those of you that graduate from all four classes you’ll receive:
Blue Kudzu Sake t-shirt
Blue Kudzu Sake (once released)
Certificate of Completion
$25.00 Gift Certificate to The Blue Kudzu Tasting Room
