Happy weekend! Holiday shopping season has officially begun, and this Saturday and Sunday mark the return of Asheville’s beloved and long running handcrafted shopping event: the Big Crafty. Check out our interview with c0-founder Justin Rabuck, who started the event with his partner, Brandy Bourne! And read on for more fun stuff happening this weekend.

Thursday – Sunday

Shelter / Center for Craft Holiday Shop @ CCCD

This holiday pop-up at the Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design opens tonight at 6 p.m. with drinks, food, and music and continues through the weekend with wares from local and national makers.

Thursday

Black Snake Killaz @ The Regeneration Station

8:30 p.m.

A suggested donation ($15) gets you into this documentary screening of a #NoDAPL story. Proceeds go to Community Roots, the hosts, and Unicorn Riot, who made the film.

Friday

Grand Opening Celebration with Exmag, RBTS WIN @ Ellington Underground 

10 p.m.

Two acts that join live instrumentation and electronic music play for this celebration at downtown’s newest venue. $15.

Friday – Sunday

A Benefit for Deborah Hunt, Master Puppeteer @ BeBe Theatre

On Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. or Sunday at 6 p.m., see Snowhite, the puppet show (and live cello performance) from Deborah Hunt and Shanti LaLita. Hunt lives in Puerto Rico and is raising funds for herself and the island. Read our interview with Deborah here.

Saturday

The Art of Design: 30 Years of Hand Drawn Design by Scott Allred

Scott Allred’s graphic design work and mural painting (done with business partner and fellow artist Jeremy Russell, who together form Brushcan Custom Murals) appears on everything from a local craft brewer’s beer cans to entire facades of local businesses. Allred will celebrate that work and much more during a 4 p.m. reception Saturday at Ramp Studios on Riverside Drive celebrating a new exhibition, “The Art of Design: 30 Years of Hand-Drawn Design by Scott Allred.” The renderings span more than three decades of Allred’s wide-ranging art, which includes logos, book illustrations, packaging designs, murals and more. The Big Crafty @ the US Cellular Center

Pop-up till you drop at this holiday shopping extravaganza, featuring handmade items from passionate artists and craftspeople. This is the first year the Crafty has been two days. $5 entry on Saturday (1-8 p.m.), free entry on Sunday (11 am-6 p.m.).

Sunday

Hempy Holiday Open House

Presented by HempX and Carolina Hemp Company, this 4-9 p.m. event will feature local food and drink made from hemp products. Blake Butler and Jill Lieberman, founders of HempX, will give a short presentation on the state of hemp in North Carolina, and Frances Tacy of Franny’s Farm will talk about growing hemp on her farm this year.
