asheville_pizza_ninja_porter_2014Two beers made in Asheville won big at last week’s Craft Brewers Conference. Asheville Brewing won a gold medal for its Ninja Porter, and Wicked Weed won a bronze for its Tyrant Double Red. Here’s a snippet from Gary Glancy, reporting for the Hendersonville Times-News:

Sierra Nevada (which is opening up its new East Coast brewery in Mills River just south of Asheville) claimed a silver medal in the Rye Beer category for its Ruthless Rye IPA.

Considered one of the two most prestigious beer competitions in the world along with the Great American Beer Festival, which is also held here in Denver each October, the WBC is a biannual event hosted in different cities worldwide.

This year’s competition featured a record 1,447 breweries from 62 countries and nearly 5,000 entries in 94 beer-style categories.

It was a banner day for Western North Carolina and the rest of the Tar Heel State on Friday as well. In addition to Sierra Nevada, two Asheville breweries – Asheville Brewing Co. and Wicked Weed – took home medals. ABC earned a gold for its Ninja Porter in the Brown Porter category while Wicked Weed, which earned a gold medal at last year’s GABF, took the bronze at WBC in the Imperial Red category for its Tyrant Double Red.

Congratulations to all!
