The offices of BB&T bank have officially moved out of Asheville’s tallest building on Pack Square and into City Centre, the new office complex just east of the square at the corner of Charlotte and College streets.

The City Centre complex will be home to a new restaurant, the Iron Hen, as well as the Asheville law firm Roberts & Stevens. Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering is also moving in. A Hilton Garden hotel will also be located in the complex. The City Centre is a project by owners/developers Rusty Pulliam and John Spake is being constructed by Vannoy Construction.

The 18-story bank building took about two years to build and opened in 1965. It was known then as the Northwestern Bank Building. (It became the BB&T building in 1988.) The modern marvel ranked as the tallest building in Western North Carolina at the time. Today, it’s regarded as one of the city’s ugliest buildings.

There’s a proposal to remake the old bank building, now known as One West Pack Square, into a boutique hotel with condos. Asheville City Council will vote on the that proposal in January.
