COMMON FOUNDATION

Colorful, bright, and spirited, Common Foundation is a young group of some really talented individuals. They play a blend of reggae, rocksteady and uptempo ska, all outfitted with a big band style horn section. They’ll move from soulful instrumentals with jazz influenced solos, to sing along melodies in three part harmony. Always enjoying their performance, and always bringing a smile, Common Foundation is a new Asheville band worth checking out.

CHALWA

Chalwa is based out of Asheville, NC and plays original High Country Reggae. The band consists of a diverse all-star line-up of local musicians from bands such as Ras Alan and The Lions, Asheville Horns, Hope Massive, Josh Phillips Folk Festival, and Wiseapple. After hitting the scene in 2006, Chalwa toured throughout the southeast US and Jamaica. The band has shared the stage with reggae greats such as: Midnite, Groundation, The Meditations, Bambu Station, SOJA, Pato Banton, and many more. Chalwa released it’s first CD in 2009 and was voted one of the top World Music, Reggae bands by the MountainXpress in 2010. In support of their CD the band performed a live set on-air interview on WNCW, along with radio air play on Dubatomic Particles and Local Color. In 2011, Chalwa is releasing their second CD on Pinnacle Records and giving the people what they want…live reggae music!

Jack of the Wood: The Hill & Wood, Woody Pines
Early Show w/ THE HILL & WOOD
5pm FREE (Donations Accepted)

Hailing from Charlottesville, indie-rock sentries The Hill and Wood have been one of Virginia’s most critically adored new-fangled band for over two years. Led by Boston native Sam Bush, the band has shifted from their folk-pop roots and integrated themselves into a multifaceted and stratified sound comparable at times to the chamber-pop melodies of Belle & Sebastian, at other times the symphonic, orchestral swells of Bishop Allen and Wilco. The music’s firm foundation is Bush’s songwriting, deftly communicating the anxieties of expectation and the malaise of the modern identity, all the while uncovering rare and unexpected moments of relief.

WOODY PINES w/ NATHEN MAXWELL & THE ORIGINAL BUNNY GANG (feat Nathen Maxwell from Flogging Molly)

8pm $10

Crackerjack musicianship goes a long way toward a band’s greatness, but showmanship seals the deal. Pines, on stage, is an old soul and natural performer, storied and steeped in the best of American music. Live, the group infuses a hundred years of American music into their performance – everything from early 20th century acoustic blues and Rock-a- billy, to the sounds of the White Stripes and The Black Keys. They’ll even drop some hip-hop vibes in the mix. It’s a fast-paced, swinging, high-energy show.

Nathen Maxwell

There comes a time in his life when each and every man needs to express himself, and for Nathen Maxwell that time has come. For the past thirteen years Maxwell has been leaving his heart on stage as the bassist for the seminal Celtic rock band Flogging Molly, one of the biggest touring punk acts in the world.

An accomplished songwriter in his own right, Maxwell has contributed songs to Flogging Molly albums in years past, but things progressed differently when the band went into the studio to record Float, their most recent release. “I played these songs for the band and our singer Dave [King] said, “Nate, you’ve got your own story and I really think you should record these songs,'” Maxwell explains.

“Once I got his blessing I figured it’d be bad karma not to record and release them.”

The tracks on White Rabbit were written over the past ten years spanning from when Flogging Molly were playing weekend gigs until more recent days that have seen the act play over two hundred shows a year. However when the group collectively decided that they’d be relaxing their grueling tour schedule in 2009, Maxwell knew that this would be the perfect time to put these tracks to tape. “All I’ve got is music: I’ve got no plan B, no wealthy family members and no savings,” he explains. “But I have these songs and this music I’ve been wanting to do for a decade, and now just seemed like the right time to do it, whereas the last five years haven’t been.”

To capture the true spirit of these songs, Maxwell hooked up with his father, who he not only refers to as “his favorite drummer,” but who is also responsible for introducing Nathen to Flogging Molly. “It’s comes full circle musically for my dad and I, and I couldn’t be happier or more proud in returning the favor to him. In the studio, Maxwell teamed up with long time Flogging Molly producer Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Chuck Ragan, Lucero, Bouncing Souls, Street Dogs).

YO MAMA’S BIG FAT BOOTY BAND

It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution. Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.

The Booty Band is currently enjoying their tenth year of touring, performing well over 150 shows and completing three to four national tours every year. With a new album in the works at Echo Mountain Studios (projected release date: March 2013), a remix album debuting this July, and Spring/Summer tour in full swing, the group shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. The remix album will feature some of the band’s favorite DJ‘s including Agent 23 (GFE and 23 Skidoo), DJ leSpam (Spam Allstars), and Lee “InstaFunk” Allen (Booty Band and Eymarel) adding their unique perpectives to select tracks from Doin’ It Hard.

Doin’ It Hard, their sophomore studio release, is a reflection of the Booty Band’s approach to music, touring, performing, recording, and to life in general. Recorded at City of Progress Studios in Miami, FL under the cultivated ear of DJ leSpam, Doin’ It Hard is Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band – next-generation, redefined for a new decade. Doin’ It Hard hit the streets on March 27th 2012 release and is available on 12” vinyl, compact disc, and digital download from all of your favorite online providers.

Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band is: Lee Allen (drums), Mary Frances (keys, vocals), Greg Hollowell (saxophones, flute), Derrick Johnson (trombone), Al Al Ingram (bass, vocals), and JP Miller (guitar, vocals).

THE DEAD KENNY G’s

The Dead Kenny Gs have made their punk rock masterpiece. A 17-minute EP entitled Gorelick. Not one more second is needed as the DKGs slash and burn their way through six tracks, including originals like “Beer,” “Daddy Issues” and “Punk Rock Girlfriend,” plus a bruising rendition of their namesake The Dead Kennedys’ “Kill The Poor.” Gorelick will be released on vinyl as a limited pressing with only 500 copies being issued, after which the recording will be available solely as a digital download. The combustible punk jazz trio featuring saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser and vocalist/vibraphonist/drummer Mike Dillon have garnered a fanatical cult fan-base over years of incessant touring and critical praise, as well as through related projects like Garage A Trois, Critters Buggin and Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle.

“Given its play-on-words moniker that simultaneously drives a sock down the mouth of smooth-jazz king Kenny G and recalls the early ’80s hardcore-punk band The Dead Kennedys, the powerhouse trio taps into a sound that fuses jazz and punk. It’s a crazy mix played intensely by a group that has the skill and knowledge to pull it off.”
– Alarm Magazine

”Dead Kenny Gs is a definitive statement of purpose: a resolute denunciation of all-things artificial. Skerik and his compatriots use their un-compromised art to draw an aesthetic line in the sand at the expense of crass commercialization that contaminates our art, our food, and what passes for our political discourse. It’s fun, fearless, and, if you are the ass-shaking type, you can get down accordingly.” – Popmatters

SONS OF RALPH

9pm $7

Ralph Lewis, who turned 80 in April 2008, has been playing and singing his unique style of bluegrass music since his childhood in Madison County. Growing up in a family of musicians (Ralph’s father was a legendary mountain musician), at age fifteen, Ralph began performing with his older brother, Ervin. From there he has played in many groups including, The Lewis Brothers, The Carolina Pals, and The Piney Mountain Boys. In the 1970s, he was invited by Bill Monroe to join the Bluegrass Boys on national and international tours and at the Grand Ole Opry. Sons Martin and Don have also performed with Bill Monroe at the Grand Ole Opry when they were kids traveling with their father during school breaks. In 2001, Ralph received the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Award which is given annually to “individuals who have made significant contributions to the folk traditions in the southern mountains.” So where does Ralph Lewis go from here? He was in on the cutting edge of rock-n-roll. He played with Bill Monroe, and then left the Bluegrass Boys on his own accord. Now, he fronts a band that’s waiting to explode. What else can the man do? “I want to get my sons in the limelight while I still can,” said Lewis.”I’m plugging a 100 percent for them. I’ve already had my light shining.” Ralph pauses and then adds, “There’s no closer harmony than family.”
