More of what’s going around:

-A Mexican restaurant called Mountain Madre Mexican Kitchen & Agave Bar is opening in the former Scully’s bar and grill location on Walnut Street. There’s a new sign up in the window.

The Montford rooftop bar at the new Hyatt Place Hotel on the corner of Montford Avenue and Haywood Street opened this week.

Blair Johnston, a fourth-grade teacher at Vance Elementary, writes to tell me she has organized an online fundraiser for her students. Details:

Objective: My students need their own, individual Chromebook to enable a personalized learning environment that allows them to engage in a deeper, immersive, future-oriented school experience.

The auction will run from August 22-28. I’ve acquired some pretty cool items that you can see in the attached flyer. A few highlights:
-2 tickets and a signed poster for The Avett Brother’s sold out show in Boone, NC on September 8th.
-2 Sunday tickets(Oct. 23) for the Fall LEAF Festival
-Voucher for 8 people for Conundrum Escape Room experience
-Wine Tasting for 8 at RayLen Vineyard in Mocksville, NC
-2 tickets for Brandi Carlile concert at Highland Brewing on September 10th
-4 tickets and a Goody Bag for an Asheville Tourists game

-The Overland Expo East will be held at the Biltmore Estate this year, Oct. 7-9. The event, which had been held at Taylor Ranch the past couple of years, is “the premier overlanding event in the world—no other event offers the scope of classes taught by the world’s leading experts, alongside a professional-level trade show that brings together in one place all the camping and vehicle and motorcycle equipment and services you need to get outfitted and get going,” says the event’s website.

BaconFest Asheville is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 3 at Highland Brewing. The festival is produced by 105.9 The Mountain.

Canio Costanzo broadcasts Reynolds High School football games via the website www.rocketssportsnetwork.com, where fans of the team can go to listen. Advertising monies go toward the booster club, and yes they are looking for sponsors. Email Costanzo at [email protected] for more info.

-The electronic band STS9 is scheduled to play Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on Nov. 5. Back in 2014, the band cut short its concert at the Thomas Wolfe after emergency responders were called in to treat several concert-goers who had apparently overdosed on drugs.

-The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County is hosting a talk about the history of Charlotte Street at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 at St. Mary’s Church Parrish Hall, 337 Charlotte Street. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $10 to support local preservation. More:

Two long-time PSABC members, Kim Leatherwood and Kieta Osteen-Cochrane, team up for a timely presentation that travels from the Civil War to civil engineering to how preservation tools can impact tomorrow. Kim is an avid preservationist, lifelong student of local history, and member of the PSABC Education Committee. Kieta is Chair of same committee, PSABC board member, retired college administrator, preservation activist, and a native of the Charlotte Street area. Both women have deep roots over generations in their beloved western North Carolina.

“Few people know that the closing of UNC in the Civil War directly affected how Charlotte Street evolved and grew,” says Kieta Osteen-Cochrane, Education Committee Chair. “Now, as Charlotte Street may further develop as a modern corridor, preservation can impact how things change.”

“Permits have been filed for a restaurant at 15 Walnut St. called Pete’s Pies. The owner of that eatery is reportedly also planning an English pub.”

Don’t expect a correction. It’s not something that they seem to bother with, around here . . .
