Some of what’s going around:

Word on the street is that actor Woody Harrelson is looking to buy a house in Asheville. He’s visited Asheville before, most notably when Harrelson was in the area shooting the first Hunger Games movie.

Ingles Markets Inc. has a new president and CEO, according to news reports. Jim Lanning, who has served as president of the Black Mountain-based grocery store chain, was promoted to the job last week. Robert P. Ingle II, the company’s board chairman, made the announcement.

-Lest there be any doubt about the fervor with which economic developers in Roanoke went to in trying ton convince Oregon-based Deschutes Brewing to locate a new East Coast brewery in their town, read this Roanoke Times editorial and the follow-up to it. The editorials make it clear that an economic development recruitment effort can play out over several year, and it doesn’t always turn simply on financial incentives. I think Buncombe County economic development officials could take a few pages from the Roanoke playbook here.

Trade & Lore coffee shop on Wall Street in downtown Asheville is open. It is spacious and beautiful. Check it out.

-More word on the street: The Avett Brothers are shooting a music video in Asheville next week. Working with Asheville talent is nothing new for the Avetts, who have recorded at Echo Mountain Studios and worked with puppeteer Hobey Ford on a past video.

Minutes from the March 17, 2015 Buncombe County Board closed meeting on Deschutes Brewery.

They had been previously shared with the seven members of the Board of Commissioners to make them aware of what would be released. The board will vote on whether to approve the minutes at its next meeting.

“Wondering why y’all haven’t made any posts/reports on HB 2? Woody Harrleson- that’s news??”

Here it is. This blog is full of 14th hand rumors of celebrity supposed sightings in Asheville, like the one a couple of years ago about Denzel Washington buying dog dishes in Target. Seriously: http://ashvegas.com/demosite/ashvegas-celebrity-sighting-denzel-washington-at-target-in-south-asheville

I bet Harrelson is buying the same house Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman bought before the divorce. Or maybe the same one Robin Williams was supposed to have bought. Or maybe the same entire floor of downtown condos Steven Speilberg was supposed to have bought. Or maybe the same house the Obamas were going to buy but didn’t.

For a town that likes to pride itself on its sophistication it sure does go loo-loo over every silly rumor about celebrities supposedly moving here.

“I think Buncombe County economic development officials could take a few pages from the Roanoke playbook here.”

Such as? Lots of innuendo, not much substance there, Jason. The Roanoke writeup talks about the city and state bending over backwards, forwards and sideways for Deschutes. The VA governor flew out to Oregon to court them. Was Pat McCrory going to do that for Buncombe?

Seriously, some of the details are pretty pathetic and needy: midnight tours of the state capitol? Grateful Dead box sets? So if ‘taking pages out of the Roanoke playbook’ means abject hands-and-knees begging any potential corporate suitor, then… no. It’s all too reminiscent of college athletics boosters laying on strippers and beer for potential high school recruits.
