More of what’s going around:

-There’s a sign on the door at Atlanta Bread Company on Merrimon Avenue saying that the restaurant has closed. That restaurant was a popular meet-up and work space for a lot of folks in North Asheville, a loyal reader tells me. Anyone got any intel? UPDATED: From the Atlanta Bread page on Facebook:

It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart that we decided to close the Merrimon Ave location. We want to thank everyone for your loyalty over the years. We are truly going to miss all the locals that came in everyday, not just for the food but for the conversations as well. It was as close to the show Cheers as you’ll get. I guess all good things must come to an end. We haven’t left Asheville though, so come visit us on the south side of town. Thanks again everybody!!

WLOS-TV reporter/anchor Frank Kracher has been MIA on the local news recently. So what gives? I messaged him, and he said he’s been recovering from back surgery, and is set to return soon. In other WLOS news, traffic reporter Jaclyn DeAugustino and reporter Ashlea Surles are both reportedly moving on to new jobs in bigger markets. And finally, Holly Headrick is set to return from maternity leave in another week or so.

The Magnetic Theatre will hold its  first public fund-raiser for the Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular on Sept. 14. The Bernstein Family Christmas Preview Party will feature all your favorite Bernstein characters, and they’ll perform special Bernstein numbers and offer a glimpse of the new show. The party will also give fans the chance to buy tickets to this year’s production before everyone else gets a shot in October. Tax-deductible tickets to the fund-raiser will go on sale through a link on the theater’s website today to celebrate a little Bernstein Christmas magic in July!

SuperHappy Trivia celebrates its one-year anniversary in Asheville. The next show is Aug. 17 at 35Below. Here’s more:

We’ve come a long way since 2015 and we’ve learned so much. Such as the fact that Jeff Catanese likes to light things on fire, and that Rodney Smith has incriminating photos of almost all the residents of East Asheville. Mostly, we’ve learned that we provide the comedy tonic that Asheville so richly deserves. For our show’s birthday, we’re pulling out all the stops. Hosts Adam Arthur and Troy Burnette have signed up (Matt Burke, Jeff Catanese, Travis Lowe and Jill Summers with Host Adam Arthur and Musician Tony Willingham)

Heavy-hitting panelists Tommy Calloway, Betsy Puckett, Rodney Smith, and Jeff Catanese to do battle over pointless trivia. That, plus music by the Amazing SuperHappy One-Man Band, Anthony Willingham and you’ve got yourselves a crackerjack evening of oddball unscripted entertainment. If you’re interested in tickets, please visit ashevilletheatre.org and click on 35Below. Tickets are 12 bucks making us one of the best values in town. Don’t wait too long to buy your ticket, as our shows have been selling out.

-From Greg Garrison of The Hop ice cream shop:

Good afternoon, friends. It is with gratitude and love that I make the following announcement:
The series of conversations to help support area nonprofits started by our late friend and brother in the community, Steven Liebenhaut, titled Helping Others, In Honor of Uncle SteveNyou, will continue on Aug. 11 at The Hop Ice Cream Cafe. The nonprofit featured for this installment will be the wonderful folks at Asheville Music School, with whom Steve and I had been working. We will get to meet some of the music teachers and students and get to hear a performance or two as well. Details here.
Going forward, every few months the conversation will continue with different organizations to help spread the love for and increase knowledge about what great work they do for people, kids and families in the community. Steve means so much to so many people and has been an absolute gift to everyone of them. If you would like to help spread that gift and be a part of Helping Others please feel free to message me or simply join us in conversation on August 11th 7-8pm at The Hop on Merrimon. I will plan to have more details about future events lined up by then.
Also, thank you so much to Steve’s brother, Fred Liebenhaut, with the help of family and friends, who helped put together this wonderful video. It brings a smile to my face.

CreativeMornings, a new, free breakfast speaker series, will be held every final Friday of the month at 9 am at the The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design. More: “The first Creative Mornings event for Asheville is set for Aug. 26. The worldwide speaking theme for August is: WEIRD! It’s perfect for Asheville’s first talk.”

Asheville Brewing Company will release Beerwine, a Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel-Aged Porter with Sour Cherries, on Friday, July 29 at 5 p.m., according to a press release. More:

This very limited brew was aged in a wine barrel for nine months. It will be available on draft only at both brewpubs on Merrimon Ave and Coxe Ave.

“When we got this Cabernet Sauvignon barrel, it seemed perfect for aging our Ninja Porter,” says Pete Langheinrich, Asheville Brewing’s head brewer. “Adding sour cherries gives it a sweet but tart kick that melds with the dark fruit flavors of the red wine. We also like the idea of a tribute to North Carolina’s native soft drink, Cheerwine.”
Tasting notes: Full-bodied aged Ninja Porter with sour cherries. The Cabernet Sauvignon lends dark fruit flavors and a savory pepper bite, while the addition of sour cherries offers a sweet but tart richness on the finish.

Asheville Outlets will hold two Better Than Tax Free Shopping Weekends this year in preparation for back-to-school, according to a press release. Here’s more:

The first will take place Friday, July 29th through Sunday, July 31st. The second will be Friday, August 5th through Sunday, August 7th. Asheville Outlets retailers will offer shoppers extra savings on already reduced prices both weekends.

“Back-to-school shopping is something most kids look forward to, but it can be a big expense for parents. Asheville Outlets retailers are doing their part to help over the next two weekends with even better than tax free savings on a lot of the items kids need for the school year,” said Sharon Morgan, General Manager, Asheville Outlets.

Participating Asheville Outlets retailers include ASICS, Bath & Body Works, Christopher & Banks, Clarks Outlet, Cole Haan, Field & Stream, Express Factory Outlet, Fragrance Outlet, francesca’s, Gap Factory Store, iSmashed NC, Kirkland’s, Maurices, New York & Company Outlet, OshKosh B’gosh, Perfumes 4 U, Talbots Outlet, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Bradley, VF Outlet, west elm OUTLET, Wilsons Leather, WorkShop Tools, Zales Outlet and more.

Stores will feature a variety of special offers and savings on must haves for back-to-school including clothing, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear. Additionally, other items not usually included in the tax-free categories, such as jewelry and kitchenware, will also be on sale.
