More of what’s going around, including the opening of a Vintage Kava, a new kava bar, in West Asheville:

-The annual Go Topless gathering is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Pack Square.

-A new kava lounge called Vintage Kava recently opened at 203 Haywood Road in West Asheville. The owners are Danielle Harrigan and Joshua Senzig. Vintage Kava is open daily from noon until midnight. Here’s more, from a press release:

You never know what treasures you may find in a vintage store. You also never know who you may meet at a kava lounge. Vintage Kava decided to combine these ideas together by incorporating a vintage store (Star Shine Vintage) in with a kava lounge (Vintage Kava). You would not expect to find a kava lounge in the back of a vintage store, but it is a hidden gem! Vintage Kava also offers traditional Yerba Mate, Kratom, and CBD products made from hemp.

-After a three-year hiatus, Montford Park Players is bringing back one of its most-loved shows, The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged), according to a press release. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from Sept. 8 through Sept. 23, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. This performance is free and open to the public.

-The Asheville Art Museum, in partnership with The Collider, will screen the documentary Earthcaster at the Aug. 29 edition of Movie Night at The Collider, a monthly film series focused on science, climate, and environmental topics, according to a press release. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. “Earthcaster explores North Carolinian Thomas Sayre’s artmaking process of blending art and science to address both the past and future. The film, which took three years to produce, focuses on Sayre’s massive sculptures and the communal effort invested into each one, contrasting with the stereotype of the misanthropic, lone maverick artist,” the press release states.

-The Freeway Revival is set to release their first full length album, Revolution Road, according to a press release. The band will be touring this fall to promote the record, and will be back in Asheville for a hometown record release concert at Isis Music Hall on Nov. 18. “The album features a healthy mix of guitar driven soul and rock n roll with a flare of psychedelic, complimented by four part vocal harmonies,” according to a press release.

-Diamond Brand Outdoors and Frugal Backpacker are collecting used eclipse glasses and donating them to Astronomers Without Borders and local schools, according to a press release. More:

Donated glasses do not have to be those sold by the stores; they could have been purchased from any retailer. Eclipse glasses can be dropped off at either of two Diamond Brand Outdoors locations or Frugal Backpacker by Monday, Aug. 28, during regular business hours. In exchange, community members will receive a coupon for $5 off any purchase of $25 or more for each pair of glasses ($5 off any purchase of $20 or more at Frugal Backpacker). Astronomers Without Borders has announced a program to collect the used glasses and distribute them to schools in South American and parts of Asia, which will experience their own eclipses in 2019. Diamond Brand Outdoors is also working with local school systems interested in used glasses for astronomy activities and experiments.

-Dream Theater will perform at 8 p.m. on Nov. 29 at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville. Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. The cost of a ticket is $39.50, $54.50, and $64.50 at the U.S. Cellular Center box office.

-Bon Iver will perform at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, with a limit of four tickets per customer. The cost of a ticket is $49.50, $69.50 or $99 at the U.S. Cellular Center box office. The opener as of now is Aero Flynn.

-The Haywood Street Congregation Golf for Awareness event is set for noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Asheville Municipal Golf Course. The event is a fundraiser for the Downtown Welcome Table, which feeds more than 400 people lunch every Wednesday and another 300 people on Sundays.

-Neon Moon, a self-described honky tonk, is coming to 49 Emma Road.

 

-Ole Shakey’s will celebrates the last few days of summer with at luau from 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 17. The event will debut the Riverside Drive bar’s new tiki bar. The event includes whole-hog barbecue by American Pig , tiki drinks, live music and more. This event is for ages 21 and up. The $25 ticket includes the full experience, full meal, and a tiki drink (additional drinks offered at an additional cost). Tickets are available for purchase under “ticketed events” tab on the Shakey’s website.

-The American Institute of Architects, Asheville Section (AIA Asheville), will celebrate architecture, architects, and great design at their 2017 Architecture Celebration and Design Awards at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 at City County Plaza, according to a press release. More:

The evening begins with a social hour followed by a video awards presentation. Residential and commercial categories will be recognized as well as other special awards. This year AIA Asheville will award The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County with a “Citizen Architect” award for their efforts and lasting contributions to preserving architecture in the community.

Tickets for the Architecture Celebration and Design Awards are $20 and include food from Corner Kitchen Catering, beer, and wine. Visit aiaasheville.org for details or this link to purchase tickets.
