Some of what’s going around to start the week:

-The UNC Asheville men’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament after winning the Big South Championship tournament on Sunday. The Bulldogs rallied to beat Winthrop 77-68. The win gave UNCA its first Big South title since 2012. This is the fourth time in the program’s history that it is headed to the NCAA tournament.

Asheville’s Technical Review Committee on Monday gave early approval for plans to build two, four-story buildings housing 18 townhouses along Southside Avenue and Short Coxe Avenue on the city’s South Slope. The location of the new residential housing is 88 Southside Ave. The committee also continued until April a hearing on a proposal from Asheville Outlets to build a new two-story, 75,000-square-foot retail building and an 8,000-square-foot retail building at its location on 800 Brevard Road. The planned construction is the next phase of Asheville Outlets, which opened last year.

-There will be a car show at Bent Creek Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 30 to benefit the Asheville Humane Society. The event will feature 60 classic cars and trucks, as well as live entertainment and food. Admission is free and the Humane Society will have pets on hand for adoption. Bent Creek Baptist Church is located at 1554 Brevard Road (across from the entrance to The North Carolina Arboretum).

-There’s a karaoke contest starting this week at Twisted Laurel with a grand prize of $500. It’s called Twisted Idol (similar to Arcade Idol was a few years back here in Asheville). For the next four weeks, judges will choose two winners a night. Weekly winners will be part of the finals and will have a shot at winning $500. To get involved, sign up at Twisted Laurel before 9 p.m. on Thursday night. The contest will be held between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. An “open karaoke” goes from 10 p.m. to midnight.

The Hop Ice Cream Shop is collaborating with 12 Bones barbecue restaurant to create a flight of eight new flavors, including a chipotle barbecue sauce-flavored ice cream. The special tasting will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday at The Hop Ice Creamery, 167 Haywood Road in West Asheville, across from Hole doughnut shop.

-Hendersonville is hopping with new venues for musicians, the Hendersonville Times-News reports.

Favilla’s is getting closer to opening a second location in the shopping center at 640 Merrimon Ave.
