–The owners of Buffalo Nickel restaurant on Haywood Road in West Asheville have announced they’re closing at the end of the month.
–Building permits show the owners of TakoSushi, a Georgia-based restaurant that features both sushi and Southwestern food, are moving head with improvements to their planned site on Asheville’s South Slope at the corner of Coxe and Southside avenues.
–JuneBug Retro Resort is opening this July in Weaverville. Looks like vintage glamping.
-There’s a new outfitter open near Hominy Creek Park, I’ve heard, but don’t have any further info. Anybody?
–Wicked Weed has announced that it’s big summer beer festival, the Funkatorium Invitational set for July 8, is moving to a 7-acre field next to its barrel-aging site known as the Funk House in south Asheville. The address is 95 Old Shoals Road in Arden. The event will feature live music, more than 70 breweries, food selections from eight regional chefs and more. It’s turning into one of Asheville’s premiere beer fests, and it comes at a hefty price. A general admission ticket is $100.
–Matt Coffay, a 30-year-old political activist, UNC Asheville graduate and former farmer, has announced that he’s running for the 11th District U.S. House seat held by Republican Mark Meadows. Coffay leads the local chapter of Our Revolution, a group of progressive Democrats.

School of the Alternative, formerly Black Mountain School, announces a limited space offer for Asheville-area students only. With a few spots left in the second session (May 18th-30th), we are offering local residents a $350 rate for two weeks of classes. With this local rate, you can attend all classes, enjoy dinner with our community, and attend any and all community events. Essentially, this excludes sleeping on campus and eating breakfast or lunch. This is a great opportunity for local folks to engage with the greater School of the Alternative community and enjoy our class offerings at a discounted rate (regular on-campus rate is $800 for a 2-week session). If you’re local and can’t afford the regular tuition, but are still interested in progressive arts education, then this is for you!
School of the Alternative is inspired by the legacy that previous alternative schools have left before us, and we seek to create conditions necessary for a present-day community of pioneering artists and critical thinkers. We are so fortunate to hold our sessions on the original campus of Black Mountain College. We hold two 2-week sessions each summer. SotA is an experiment in both education and community that encourages progressive thinking, creating, and connecting. Instead of a traditional classroom environment, our campus supports a collectively built, self-directed approach to learning, which gives the opportunity for all participants to learn and to teach.
In opposition to traditional, prescriptive educational models, we aim to foster passion-driven learning, where the programming has the fluidity to change based on the classes needs, where students can choose their level of engagement, where there are no prerequisites, no grades, no diplomas. The new outfitter near hominy creek park is another location for French Broad Outfitters. They have kayak, tubing and sup trips and a bar at the new location.
