-Wordfest 2015: From a press release:
Lenoir-Rhyne University presents Asheville Wordfest at its Asheville campus in downtown Asheville May 1 and 2. In its eighth year, Asheville Wordfest turns its eye on Asheville and invites community members to write about their city. Using the theme “The City Narrative / The Narrative City,” festival director and also director of the university’s graduate writing program Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative, Laura Hope-Gill, sees this Wordfest as a celebration of the many voices that make up a place.
-Asheville beer scene in the news: Our State magazine has a comprehensive look at the craft brewing scene across North Carolina in a new four-part series. In Asheville, Our State focuses on craft brewers on the city’s South Slope.
-Asheville Pinball Museum in new location: The Asheville Pinball Museum opens in its new location at 1 Battle Square in downtown Asheville on Friday.
-Restaurant job fair: From a press release:
The Asheville French Quarter will be hosting a two day job fair for positions in all three Lexington Avenue restaurants. Bouchon, Creperie Bouchon and Lafayette, the newest venture slated to open the first of May. The restaurants are looking to fill about 50 positions.
The fair will be held on Monday April 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Tuesday April 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Interested parties should apply in person on either of these days at 68 Lexington Avenue at the location that was formerly Local Taco. The Asheville living wage positions include but are not limited to: hosts, servers, bus staff, bartenders, oyster shuckers, line cooks, prep cooks, dish washers and stewards. -UNCA commencement: Author Wiley Cash will deliver the commencement address at UNC Asheville’s Class of 2015 on May 9 in Kimmel Arena. Cash graduated UNCA 15 years ago with a literature degree and has gone on to be an acclaimed young novelist.
Also at commencement, Michell Hicks, principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, will be honored at the commencement along with Cash; both will receive honorary doctor of humane letters degrees.
-Brandon Heath at UNCA: Contemporary Christian musician Brandon Heath will perform at 8 p.m. on May 14 at Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville. Tickets are $30 for floor-level seating; $20 for mezzanine ($25 at the door). Advance ticket sales begin on Friday, April 10 at www.uncabulldogs.com/tickets, by calling 828.258.7900, or in person at the Kimmel Arena box office at the Sherrill Center on the UNC Asheville campus.
