-Nepal relief: Chai Pani restaurant is donating 10 percent of sales today to Nepal relief. Details:

A call to action…
Travelers the world over (and many of us here at Chai Pani) have been embraced by the majestic mountains and gentle people of Nepal. Today Nepal is suffering and they need our help. Let’s come together in solidarity with Nepal and send them some much needed support. The Indian army has named its aid effort in Nepal ‘Operation Maitri’ or friendship. On this Tuesday April 28th, Chai Pani will sponsor ‘Operation Maitri’, collecting the profit from the day’s sales in Asheville and Atlanta and we’ll donate it to globalgiving.org in the name of ‘Operation Maitri’ to help fund the rescue and aid operations needed now. We invite the service industry worldwide to participate. Please join us, lets all do our part to help.

-Colburn Earth Science Museum fundraiser: Here are the details, from loyal reader Jon:

Spring is in the air and that means it’s time for the Colburn Earth Science Museum’s annual Under the Stars party. This year guests will truly be under the stars at one of the coolest outdoor venues in the area, The Boathouse Riverside Pavilion in the River Arts District. Last year’s Under the Stars party was organized by the Asheville Affiliates and was so successful The Colburn is establishing the fundraiser as an annual event.

Under the Stars will be held on Thursday, May 21st from 6-10 pm. Attendees will enjoy the sounds of live music by Red Dirt Revelators, while savoring food from top area restaurants and beer from both Catawba Brewing Company and one of Asheville’s newest breweries, Bhramari Brewhouse. There will also be a silent auction with items from local businesses that will raise funds for the museum.

The Colburn has begun an exciting transition to a general science museum. There are plans to move to a more visible and accessible location in the heart of downtown Asheville at the Callen Center. This event will be the first opportunity for the public to be involved with gathering support and raising funds for the capital campaign and to support The Colburn’s science education programming.

Tickets for the event are $25 in advance, $30 at the door and include beer, wine, food, and entertainment. Advance tickets are available for purchase either by visiting the Colburn Earth Science Museum in person, or by purchasing online at:

I will add that Publix has better customer service. On opening day, they all seemed to greet me and took my groceries to the car (for each customer). There were a lot of samples and they promoted the grand opening well (anyone else see the advertising truck drive around). I hope Ingles learns from them and does as good or better when they open the Enka Ingles. I’m glad Ingles is trying with the remodel sales.

Also, I think the red and yellow indicates sales which of course Ingles has as good of sales as Publix.

Another advantage of Publix is the name. Publix represents the public not just the Ingle family (also Publix is employee owned not serfs working for the lord of the manor), though with the Ingle name on the building their “good” family name is on the line (family-controlled is better than just a corporation). American Owned sign helped put out Food Lion which of course is foreign-owned. Ingles needs to find or create an advantage to exploit and take on Publix (may we one day see an Ingles in Lakeland, Florida?)

Well, Ingles customer service is historically bad. Not a resounding endorsement.

I checked out the new Publix yesterday. Ingles is MUCH better. Ingles is spacious and bright/cheerful, but the new Publix is dark like a cave and everything is cramped together (Depts. seem to be thrown to together- poor layout). Just as the building is weird on the outside with the weird triangle roof, it is even weirder on the inside. You have to walk all around the café to get to the next isle (hard to describe but just plain strange).

Publix vs. Ingles: 1. Publix has a better website and viewing the weekly flyer online is easier than at Ingles. 2. Green color is better than Ingles yellow and red (McDonalds) colors. Green is trendy (green energy connotations) and means fresh perhaps go (yellow and red are stop and cautious) 3. Ingles needs to redesign their sale signs 4. Ingles designs better stores (airy, spacious, bright, well-organized). I brought some people from out of town and we all agreed that Ingles looked a lot nicer than most grocery stores. 5. Ingles carries more products 6. Ingles is HQ in Asheville. On a long trip, the first Ingles I see, I know I’m close to home.

Overall, Ingles wins hands down. Shopping is a lot more pleasurable at Ingles.

Ingle’s and Publix have very nice stores.

Ingle’s newer stores are larger in size (65,000 to 80,000 square feet) than most Publix stores (45,000 to 55,000 square feet). Publix’s varying store sizes allows it to open quantities of quality stores in various markets.

WLOS reported that 100+ people were in line waiting for the new store to open. The stupidity of the average human is truly amazing.

One hundred customers may have found the wait worth it if they received free groceries.

Somebody starts a rumor on Facebook about free food and they come a runnin? Kind of proves my point.

Someone on Facebook posted that they were giving away $100 gift cards to the first 100 customers, which is more than enough incentive to stand in line for an hour or two. None of the articles about the opening mention gift cards, but the person who posted the rumor claimed it was on the Publix web site.
