More of what’s going around:

-The remnants of Hurricane Irma blew through Asheville and Western North Carolina on Tuesday night, downing trees and knocking out power around Asheville. Duke Energy reported more than 18,000 homes without power at the height of the stormy weather. Local schools were canceled for the day as power and clean-up crews got to work.

-The original location of 12 Bones barbecue restaurant on Lyman Street in the River Arts District was demolished Monday. Barack Obama famously visited the restaurant a couple of times over the years as a U.S. Senator and then as President.

-Word on the street: Sears at the Asheville Mall will be transformed into a movie theater.

-The Goombay festival, the long-running Asheville festival that celebrates African-Carribean cultures, had fewer food vendors and a slimmed down music line-up this year compared to past years, which disappointed fans of the event.

-Asheville City Council will meet in regular sessions tonight and has a full agenda. One item of note: interviews of three people for a vacancy on the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. The three candidates to fill the vacancy are: Andrew Celwyn, co-owner of Herbiary; Jennifer Lauzon, co-owner of LaZoom Tours; and Elizabeth Button, co-owner of Nightbell restaurant.

Asheville Holiday Parade applications are open.

-This city of Asheville survey is seeking the public’s feedback on street performers in downtown. City officials say they’ve received a ton of responses. Check it out.
