Here’s a quick look at some of what’s happening around town:
-Word on the street: A new doughnut shop is coming to Haywood Road in West Asheville. I’m hearing it is to be located in the building next to Digable Pizza.
-Spider Bush Manor Supper Club: That’s the name of the semi-regular dinner that chef Elliott Moss is cooking up at Spider Bush Manor, the name of the Emma home for a group of local artists, including Gabriel Shaffer. Find Moss on Twitter @blacktablecloth or Shaffer on Facebook to get the heads-up on dates/times. I attended a dinner there a couple of weeks ago and had a great time meeting folks around the table and chowing down on some of Moss’ amazing barbecue. The meal is six courses, costs $50 a head and is BYOB. Check it.
-Charlotte Bobcats visit sick kids: The team, which is holding its training camp in Asheville and will play the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, recently visited Mission Children’s Hospital. Good job, guys.
-Oskar Blues on Brew Dogs: The Oskar Blues brewery in Brevard is going to be featured in the Oct. 17 episode of Brew Dogs on Esquire TV, according to OB and Asheville Growler on the ol’ Facebook. Brew Dogs looks like a great show, beer lovers.
-Parade entries sought: Here’s the press release:
The Asheville Downtown Association has extended the deadline for application for this year’s Asheville Holiday Parade. Applications will now be accepted until Friday, October 11.
The 67th Asheville Holiday Parade, presented by Bojangles and produced by the Asheville Downtown Association (ADA), takes place Saturday, November 23 beginning at 11am. The parade theme is “A Star is Born” to honor the many talented dancers, painters, singers, actors and artists that perform in our community. …
Applications for parade entries are available online at ashevilleparade.org or by emailing [email protected]. Applications may be completed online but will not be valid until entry fee is received. All entries will be evaluated based on interpretation of theme, community spirit and contribution to the overall parade.
-Festival roundup: Here’s a quick look at upcoming festivals:
Asheville Downtown Association Oktoberfest is Oct. 12.
Three Days of Light in Hot Springs is Oct. 11-13.
Hard Lox Jewish Food Festival is Oct. 20.
-Body painting performance: Looking ahead, there’s a cool body painting performance from 5-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at ZaPow Gallery in downtown Asheville. Georgette Pressler is the nationally acclaimed body painter, according to ZaPow.
WHY IS THE CHRISTMAS PARADE A WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING? DOESN’T THE SATURDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING MAKE MORE SENSE SINCE THAT IS WHEN THERE ARE PEOPLE IN TOWN. ONCE AGAIN THE DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION HAS OUTDONE ITSELF. I ASSUME THEIR FLOAT IN THE PARADE WILL BE A SHORT BUS.
Is the donut shop the Vortex guys, or is someone else getting the jump on them?
Nate, the doughnut shop on Haywood is not Vortex. some other concept that has been described to me as a high-end “third wave coffee bar” that will also sell pastries. i don’t know what that means, exactly.
Jason’s correct. It’s not Vortex Doughnuts. I’ve also heard it’s something other than doughnuts going in that space. Until we have a location we’ll be doing pop-up deliveries (starting Friday) through Asheville Munchies. Stay tuned.
