-Public School: Public School, the newest bar on the booming South Slope, is set to open Monday. The bar is located on Banks Avenue next to Buxton Hall Barbecue, restaurant which is still under construction, Catawba Brewing and Vortex Doughnuts.

-Asheville City Council candidates: Brian Haynes and Carl Mumpower have officially filed to run for Asheville City Council, joining Julie Mayfield, Lindsay Simerly, Marc Hunt and Joe Grady. A primary election is set for October.

-Fundraising event July 16 for The Hope Chest for Women: Here are the details, from a press release sent in by loyal reader Kathryn:

Tickets are now on sale for “Some Like It Hot”, a party benefiting The Hope Chest for Women, featuring local food, craft beer and wine, live music, and raffle items that range from restaurant and outdoor recreation gift certificates to local art.

Supported by the Asheville Affiliates, “Some Like It Hot” event will be held at the newly renovated Downtown Asheville Masonic Temple at 80 Broadway Street, Asheville on July 16, 2015 from 6 – 9 p.m.

Musical group, Hank West and the Smokin’ Hots combines 25th century pop music with 20th century jazz. Based out of Asheville, North Carolina, the band now, fully reunited, guitarist Leo Johnson, keyboardist Andrew J. Fletcher, drummer Jay Good and bassist Craig Sandberg are led into the old world by the expedition’s fearless leader, horn player Hank West.

The Asheville Masonic Temple will host The Asheville Affiliates for “Some Like It Hot”, a fundraising benefit to support The Hope Chest for Women. Some Like it Hot is open to the public. Tickets are $25 online at: somelikeithot.brownpapertickets.com ($30 at the door) price covers all food, beverages, and entertainment.

For more than a century, the Asheville Masonic Temple has been one of Asheville’s true architectural gems. The newly renovated Temple can host events with up to 400 guests, offers ceremony and reception space, as well as large and small break-out rooms. The Asheville Masonic Temple is excited to announce a partnership with Shay Brown Events for management of the Temple. Shay Brown Events looks forward to planning and showcasing local community events and weddings in their historic premier downtown venue.

The Hope Chest for Women was founded in 2003 to relieve some of the burden created by the cost of breast and gynecologic cancer treatment. Hope Chest provides support resources, financial assistance and hope to women living in Western North Carolina with breast or gynecologic cancer. Since 2003, they have awarded over $200,000.00 in assistance to women in WNC. They have assisted over 1000 unduplicated women living in our community.

Organizers are seeking donations of goods and services for the “Some Like It Hot” raffle, as well as other contributions and in-kind support for the event. -Bruisin’ Ales beer sales: Some interesting stats from Bruisin’ Ales beer store in Asheville:

Here is some nerdy stuff for you. J ran some data reports for the first half of the year that we think are pretty interesting. All reports are by consumer dollar sales in descending order. There are some surprising things here. For the first year ever, our Top Beer by Brand is not from Asheville. And, Green Man, Olde Hickory, and Wicked Weed all pushed into the top five our of the Top Breweries, knocking down some older, familiar players.
