pisgah_brewing_2015Some of what’s going around:

-Old Man Winter out, Elsa in: It seems that the popular culture influence of Frozen knows no bounds. People around town have begun referring to winter as Elsa. After an ice storm that shut down Asheville on Tuesday, residents are looking at record cold temperatures the next couple of days.

-Casino jobs in Murphy: Harrah’s has announced a March 16 job fair to fill jobs at The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians’ new casino under construction in Murphy. Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel plans to start filling 800 jobs before it opens later this year. From the release:

Due to the sixteen-week training periods, required for certain positions, the first job fair for the Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River property will be focused on hiring 270 table games dealers and approximately 30 surveillance officers. Recruiters will be at Tri-County Community College (TCCC) in Murphy, N.C. on Monday, March 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Enloe Building.

“The Table Games Department will make up about 30 percent of our employee base. Table games dealers are one of the most highly compensated front-line positions in the gaming industry, often earning $30,000-$50,000 annually, based on tips,” Lumpy Lambert, Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel’s General Manager, said.

Training for the Surveillance Department will begin this spring at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee, N.C.

Dealers hired at the March 16 job fair will be paid to attend Dealer Training School in April, May, or July this year at which training for Blackjack and one or more specialty games will begin. After completion of the training program and successfully passing an audition, dealers may work at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee until opening of the Valley River property later this year.

-Asheville Outlets stores: Looks like Clarks, Kay Jewelers and Perfumes 4U are all coming to the Asheville Outlets.

-Pam Lewis moves to Fort Collins: Pam Lewis, a former champion of entrepreneurship in Asheville, has moved to Fort Collins, Colo. In a message to me, Lewis declined to comment immediately, saying that she was sad to move and would provide an update in the future.

Lewis, Asheville’s former director of entrepreneurship for the Buncombe County Economic Development Coalition, parted ways with the umbrella organization, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, in 2013. In March 2014, she and Dale Carroll announced the launch of the Appalachian EB-5 Regional Center, a local company that sought money from foreign investors. “Rich foreigners willing to invest at least $500,000 in the mountains to create new jobs could earn the right to live and work in the U.S. with green cards for themselves and their families,” the Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

-Pisgah Brewing celebrates 10th anniversary: Congratulations, Pisgah Brewing! I remember when…. Their press release:

Pisgah Brewing Company stands out as a leader in the craft scene of WNC, as it’s flagship Pisgah Pale Ale has been unofficially considered one of the most recognized beers of the region. 2015 marks the 10-year anniversary of serving craft brews in Asheville and WNC for Pisgah Brewing, and that is reason enough for a multitude of celebrations planned for the year to commemorate the occasion. Pisgah’s anniversary is based upon it’s first keg sale, which occurred on April 13, 2005 with its first keg of Pale Ale being sold to the downtown Asheville staple, Barley’s Taproom.

Though the celebration will last throughout 2015, Pisgah’s Anniversary Week will begin with Pint Night celebrations following the 10-year anniversary of their first keg sales back in 2005. Monday, April 13 will be a Pisgah Brewing pint night at Barley’s Asheville; Tuesday, April 14 will be at Mellow Mushroom; Wednesday, April 15 at Westville Pub; and Thursday, April 16 will feature a specialties night at Thirsty Monk Downtown Asheville. Each event will mark exactly 10-years from the first keg ever sold to the participating locations, as well as commemorate that those taps have flowed Pisgah Pale Ale since their first keg sale 10 years ago.

Pisgah will finish off the week with a party at the coveted Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage on Sunday, April 19. The performers will be a round-up of some of Pisgah’s favorites from recent history, and will feature live sets from Leftover Salmon featuring Bill Payne, Pimps of Joytime, Dead 27s and, Black Mountain locals, The Travers Brothership. Tickets will be $10 to commemorate 10-years, and the doors will open to the festivities at 2 pm.

As if that wasn’t enough celebration, Pisgah Brewing has invited their brothers in brewing to help commemorate the occasion all year long as they embark upon 10 collaborations for 10-years. The list of confirmed beer collaborations includes Burial Beer Company, Wicked Weed Brewing, Asheville Brewing Company, Hi-Wire Brewing, Birdsong Brewing Company, Full Steam Brewing, Holy City Brewing Company, Fonta Flora Brewing and a special collaboration with the homebrewer’s club of Asheville, aka M.A.L.T. The 10th collaboration, deemed a special surprise, will be announced in the coming weeks. Pisgah’s first release of the 10-year Collaborations will be with Burial Beer Co featuring a new version of their 2014 favorite, Cemetary Gates, a Belgian-style IPA. The release will be held at Pisgah Brewing’s taproom on Wednesday, February 25th at 4 pm.
