Just some of what’s going around…

-New Montford fest planned: On Sunday, @SocialLifeAVL tweeted that he was working on organizing a new summer festival in Asheville called Little Montford Fest. Here’s how he responded. FYI, @PaperFrank is a mural artist who lived for a few years but is based in Atlanta and doing a great job. He’s been painting a few murals around Asheville. And @MiyaBailey is a celebrity tattoo artist based in Atlanta who grew up in Asheville.

RT @Ashevegas: @SocialLifeAvl @footync yes, what is Little Montford Fest?

@Ashevegas @footync mini festival organized by @PaperFrank & @MiyaBailey in June. Free, with live music, vendors, etc. Press release soon.

@Ashevegas @footync a way to give back, promote diversity and cross cultures. We definitely need you guys help!

@footync yep, a mini Goombay but at Montford Park. Planning to make it an annual event.

@Ashevegas @footync huge, with a stage, nice community and great location. We wanna pull off the ultimate diverse event.

-Southside Studio opening: Here’s the press release, from loyal reader Carolyn:Print

Hi Jason. I’m a regular reader of Ashvegas and I was wondering if you might be able to advertise the grand opening of Southside Studios that’s happening on Sunday the 23rd. There will be beer, food and music from 2 pm to 6 pm. We’re located in South Asheville, right by Regeneration Station and Brother Wolf. Our warehouse is comprised of 19 artists ranging from potters to painters to woodworkers to graphic designers. It’s a pretty cool, creative group of people.

-Asheville resident honored for writing: Jasmine Beach-Ferrara won an honorable mention in this year’s Hemingway Foundation/PEN Awards. The award honors the best debut fiction by an American author. Here’s the info from bostonglobe.com:

NoViolet Bulawayo, born in Zimbabwe and now a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, is this year’s winner of the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for “We Need New Names” (Little, Brown). The novel follows a 10-year-old girl who leaves her shantytown in Zimbabwe to live with an aunt in Detroit. … This year’s competition was so fierce that judges added a third honorable mention. The honorees are Jasmine Beach-Ferrara’s “Damn Love” (Ig), linked stories set in San Francisco and North Carolina; Kristopher Jansma’s “The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards” (Viking) about a young man’s quest to become a writer; and Ethan Rutherford’s “The Peripatetic Coffin and Other Stories” (Ecco), a collection with historical and contemporary themes.

-Howl In coming in April: Here’s the press release:

Full Moon Farm is an organization dedicated to the well-being of the wolfdog (wolf hybrid). A wolfdog is a dog that has a pure wolf ancestor within the last 5 generations. Situated on 17 beautiful mountain acres in Black Mountain, NC, Full Moon Farm operates as a federally recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization for abused and refused wolfdogs who find themselves in need of love, shelter, and care through no fault of their own.

On the Saturday closest to the full moon each month (April – October) Full Moon Farm hosts an open house called a “Howl In” where the public is invited to tour part of the facility, learn about the breed and hear each wolfdog’s individual story.  …

The first Howl In of 2014 is Saturday, April 12th from 3pm to 6pm. The first tour begins at 3:15pm. For directions please call 828-669-9818. For more information about Full Moon Farm visit our website at www.fullmoonfarm.org.
