Ashvegas: The City You Love. The News You Want. Some of what’s going around:

-Malaprop’s event reminder: Book lovers, put this on your calendar. From Malaprop’s:

Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe welcomes the American Booksellers Association’s 10th annual ‘Winter Institute’ to Asheville February 8-11 with events at the bookstore featuring Azar Nafisi, Stewart O’Nan, Lynn Truss, Maureen Corrigan, Reif Larsen and many other authors, editors, and publishers.

-TEDxAsheville salon: TEDxAsheville held its event last weekend. Now there’s an ancillary event set:

An invitation:
Join us on Monday, January 26 at the Altamont Theater, 5-7 pm for a TEDxAsheville salon.
If you want to help organize TEDxAsheville next year, then this salon doubles as a way to meet up with fellow TEDxers and begin the push to organize another incredible event. The 2015 TEDxAsheville organizers will be there to talk about the experience.

-The Lantern Fest coming to Asheville: Organizers of The Lantern Fest want to stage an event in Asheville and are looking for a suitable location – a large, open space that could accommodate 4,000 to 6,000 people, they tell me. Anyone have any ideas? What is The Lantern Fest, you ask? From thelanternfest.com:

Last time you released a large, burning object into the air, you were lambasted by your scoutmaster, flogged, and got your merit badge in misdemeanors. At The Lantern Fest, you join with thousands of other revelers, armed with lanterns representing their highest hopes, deepest regrets, or tiniest transgressions, and set them aloft in an offering to the Instagram gods. You’ll walk away with your record clean and smelling of Lemon Pledge and with memories burned with Lasik-like precision into your retinas.

-Guitar Trader in West Asheville to host live shows: The Guitar Trader shop on Haywood Road in West Asheville is hosting live music. First up – Andrew Scotchie and friends.

Hey there Asheville Music lovers!
Do you love the AVL music community and great local music shops such as The Guitar Trader?
Come join us Thursday Feb 26th with Andrew Scotchie/The River Rats and special guest players from the AVL community
6 pm doors.

-Asheville Outlets businesses: My FB buddy Daniel reports that he’s confirmed three stores for the new Asheville Outlets (the remodeled former Biltmore Square Mall.) The three outlets: Wilsons Leather, Banana Republic Factory Store and Gap Factory Store. Check my recent photo gallery of Asheville Outlets.

-Wall Street Cheat Sheet jobs: Wall Street Cheat Sheet, whose founders live in Asheville, is hiring writers. Go to the jobs page at Wall Street Cheat Sheet. The Cheat Sheet is “recognized digital media leader with more than 17 million monthly readers: our site has been ranked Forbes’s #1 Social Media Influencer on Wall Street and a Google Editors’ Picks partner.”

-Imladris Farms ketchup: My buddy Walter at Imladris Farm in Fairview notes on FB:

Familiar with the concept of an easter egg in video games? Here’s our real life version. Ask Clint at King Daddy’s Chicken and Waffles for the special ketchup! Local grown tomatoes, smoked to perfection – Imladris’ newest product!

-Asheville bands vie for Tiny Desk Concert appearance: Alli Marshall of the Mountain Xpress notes that several Asheville bands are vying to win NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert contest. She’s rounded up their entry videos here.

Monday was the final day for bands to submit videos to the Tiny Desk Concert contest. The winner gets to play NPR’s series. Asheville artists made a fantastic showing — we’ve collected 18 entry videos and keep learning of more. Check out songs by Jeff Thompson Music, The Moon and You Sweet Claudette Sirius.B, The Get Right Band, The Go-Devils, Mother Explosives, Grits & Soul, River Whyless and others. Did we miss a Tiny Desk submission video? Let us know and we’ll add it to the list!

-River Whyless in spotlight: The Asheville band River Whyless was featured on NPR’s World Cafe as the Cafe “Next” artist of the day on Monday. Nice to hear David Dye give Asheville a shout-out. River Whyless sounds great. River Whyless has a new album out. River Whyless music is featured in a new video distributed by Asheville’s tourism officials. In short, River Whyless is blowin’ up.

-Asheville puppies on display: Cute alert! Mountain Xpress reports that this year’s annual Puppy Bowl will feature three doggies from the Asheville Humane Society.

-New location for Red Radish in Black Mountain: The Red Radish, Black Mountain’s killer caterer, has a new location in Black Mountain. Here are the details, which include a mention of a new “public market” that sounds great:

We have found a new spot in Downtown Black Mountain to call our home and we want you to help us with a name to claim our corner. This new spot will bring our Radish family together again under one roof. For the past 3 years we have been operating Red Radish Catering Company and Red Radish To Go in two separate buildings. In addition, we will be expanding the Red Radish Bakeshop.

That’s not all! The new “Public Market” on Sutton Ave. will house 7500 square feet of retail space dedicated to improving our community of culinary offerings and every day needs.

-Carolina Public Press hiring: Carolina Public Press is hiring a managing editor.
