Just some of what’s floating around:

-Tiger Bay opens on Haywood Road: Tiger Bay is the new name of the restaurant at the back of the Battlecat coffeehouse on Haywood Road in West Asheville. The restaurant used to be called Hank’s and was focused on barbecue. But there are new owners – Tara and Phillip – who plan to focus on chutneys and other deliciousness. Artist Gabriel Shaffer will begin painting a tiger mural soon on the back of Battlecat to help people find the restaurant.

-New “buy local” effort in Asheville: There’s a new “buy local” effort being shopped around to local businesses in Asheville, which already has several strong efforts to keep people focused on supporting local, independent businesses. Susanne Hackett, who runs her own marketing company called Pollinate Asheville, declined to offer details when asked, adding details would be forthcoming next month. From what I’ve heard, the effort will have a smart phone app component, or something similar. The name is something like LoLo (as in local, local). More to come.

asheville_map_2013-New Asheville map debuts: A lovely new Asheville map made its public debut at MANNA’s Empty Bowls fundraiser on Monday night. I’ll have more on this soon. Here’s the basic info:

Map designer Bruce Daniel of The Map Lab, along with creative collaborator and editorial director Nora Daniel, have produced a beautiful and comprehensive map of the city of Asheville and the surrounding areas. The map project benefits MANNA, with every map sold providing enough food for more than a meal. This highly detailed, two-sided map includes restaurants, breweries, art spaces, entertainment venues, and many more points of interest. Topography, parks, neighborhoods, and landmarks are featured to reflect the fabric of our great city. The Asheville Map has a mobile component that provides additional information and updates, making it much more than your usual map. The map will be available for sale beginning in October at a suggested retail price of $2.99. If you are a merchant and would like to purchase maps at wholesale to sell in your store, they will be available in packs of 50. The maps can also be sold as a fundraising tool for schools or community groups, benefitting both MANNA and the organization. coming in October For map information, please email: [email protected]

-Steep Canyon Rangers to host music awards: The Brevard-based bluegrass band will host the International Bluegrass Music Awards. Very cool.

-New West Asheville signs: Have you seen the new awning up for The Mothlight at Mr. Fred’s? Way cool. As is the new sign for The Brew Pump. I’m off to get photos and will add.

-Asheville biz mag goes monthly: Capital at Play, a glossy magazine covering business in Asheville and Western North Carolina, is going monthly starting this month. The magazine is two years old and published and edited by Harley Morgan.

-“Clips” raises cash: From New Belgium Brewing:

On Friday, September 6, New Belgium Brewing’s Clips Beer & Film Tour came through town, raising nearly $11,000 for Asheville on Bikes, which is supported by the Asheville Downtown Association. Approximately 1,700 people came out to Pack Square Park: Roger McGuire Green to sample beers and enjoy films.

Clips Beer & Film Tour is now in its fourth year and will travel to 21 cities this season. The event showcases amateur films while pouring hard-to-find Lips of Faith beers and popular New Belgium classics. Each stop features a screening of selected films, a tasting of New Belgium’s beers, food from local vendors and other fun activities.

-Festivals of note: The Asheville Comic Expo arrives this weekend. Should be some great geeky gun. For beer lovers, there’s the venerable Brewgrass.

-UNCA to host film festival: From the press release:

UNC Asheville’s Healthy Aging Program Initiatives (HAPI) Lab, in collaboration with the Land of Sky Area Agency on Aging, will host an intergenerational Wisdom Film Festival from 12-6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 in the university’s Sherrill Center, Mission Health Systems Mountain View Conference Room. The festival, which is free and open to the public, will include film screenings, discussions and activities exploring perceptions on aging.

Screenings and activities during the festival include:

• 12 p.m. “Beginners,” a romantic comedy-drama about a young man reflecting on the life and death of his father, who began exploring life as an openly gay man at the age of 75. The LGBT Elder Advocates of WNC will guide a discussion following the screening.

• 2:15 p.m. “Searching for Sugar Man,” the Academy Award-winning documentary about the search for an American musician Sixto Rodriguez, who, unbeknownst to anyone in America including Rodriguez himself, had become a legend in South Africa . Lavinia Plonka, director of the Asheville Movement Center, will lead a “Telling Our Stories” activity following the screening.

• 4:15 p.m. “Harold and Maude,” the cult classic dark comedy about a young man intrigued with death, and his relationship with an older woman. Rebecca Chaplin, faculty at Asheville Tantra School, will lead a “Circle of Ages” activity following the screening.
