More of what’s going around.

-The businesses located at the Asheville Food Park on Amboy Road – Cascade Lounge, Edna’s at the River (coffee shop) – have closed. The Asheville Food Park says in a social media post that it is looking to lease space to new tenants. Edna’s said in a social media post that:

It is with much regret that today November 2nd, 2017 we are forced to close our location at the Asheville Food Park. As one of the last remaining tenants in the food park, our sales fell below minimums agreed upon with the landlord. Fear not! We plan on relocating the store as soon as we find the right location.

Edna’s in north Asheville remains open.

-Little Jumbo, a new craft cocktail bar on Broadway, opens to the public on Tuesday. The bar is the work of Chall Gray, a veteran of the Asheville bar scene, Lucia Gray and Jay Sanders.

-Word on the street: A new brewery called Leicester Brewery and Lab, is planned for the corner of Leicester Highway and Alexander Road (at the former Jerry’s Garage.)

-The Montford Pull-Up, a take-out restaurant inside the Montford convenience store on Montford Avenue, has closed. The restaurant, which opened last summer, was lauded for its delicious burgers and crowd-pleasing chicken wings. But chef/owner Chris Cox said in a weekend social media post that it was time to close:

The Montford Pull Up closed for good yesterday. I’m forever grateful for the microphone and stage that we were given. We fed so many people, learned so much about ourselves, won food competitions, gave all the blood sweat and tears we had. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, math doesn’t add up. Don’t feel sorry or sad for us. We did things the way we wanted to. A big thank you goes out to anyone who ever shopped with us. I hope y’all see the bigger picture.

-Like Asheville, Charleston is experiencing an affordable housing crisis. (Charleston Post and Courier)

-In case you missed it: Kim’s Wig Shop at the corner of Haywood Street and Wall Street, a downtown Asheville for more than 40 years, is closing. A new beer bar is being planned for the space.

-The French Broad Chocolate Lounge has achieved B Corporation certification. The respected designation is bestowed by B Lab, a nonprofit organization that supports B Corporations and supports high standards of social and environmental performance and accountability.

-Alison Fields won the first Asheville Moth GrandSlam story-telling competition. Read her story here.

-The 40th annual Woolly Worm Competition was held recently in Banner Elk, and the winning worm called for a cold, snowy start to winter with a long stretch of average temperatures before a two-week shot of more colder, snowier weather to close out the season.

-Have you heard about the new Craft City Food & Art Tours in Asheville? They’ll be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays on Nov. 18 and Dec. 16 and they cost $75 per person. The tour is sponsored by the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design in Asheville and led by Stu Helm, Asheville Food Fan, and Anna Helgeson, a local craft expert and CCCD grants and programs coordinator.) More:

Throughout this two-mile walking tour, Stu and Anna will offer ways to understand Asheville’s urban landscape and restaurant scene through the craft philosophy of thoughtful making with a reverence for process and material.

Taste, touch, and sip your way among ten carefully chosen stops, all while learning about the history of craft in the region, and encountering the creative people, objects, and libations that make Asheville a Craft City.

The Junction also closed. I hear the owners of Salt & Smoke bought it.

I feel sad for The Junction. Always enjoyed eating there, and I know it had local support, but the rapid rise of the South Slope diverted a lot of attention away from that first wave of non-studio development on Depot St, and kept it more marginal. Not much of that wave left now, but it was hugely influential on what followed in other parts of the city — especially the Magnetic Field bar on the cocktail scene.

Interesting that the Montford Pull-Up closing was announced “on social media” but not actually on the Montford Pull-Up’s Facebook page, which claims that they’re still open for business on Monday. I wonder if it was a sudden decision.
