Reminder: Go see Masterminds at The Grail Moviehouse.

-Construction on the new Jargon restaurant at 715 Haywood Road in West Asheville, which I wrote about two years ago, is kicking back into high gear. Tickets (on sale for $100 each) are on sale now for a pop-up dinner featuring Jargon restaurant’s food. The pop-up is set for Oct. 24 at The Boat House at Smoky Park Supper Club. More:

For one night only preview Chef Matthew Miner’s continental social cuisine with a ten course dinner paired with select wines. Enjoy an evening of great food, community and creativity. Isothermal Community College has the highest student loan default rate of any government-run college in the U.S., according to this Buzzfeed list.

-The Asheville Planning & Zoning Commission meets Wednesday.

Asheville Affiliates is hosting a fundraising event at 6 p.m. on Oct. 13 at Catawba Brewing. The “Throwback Thursday” event will feature The Time Machine hosted by Ben Lovett spinning tunes. The $15 ticket gets attendees two Catawba beers, some food and a chance to win door prizes. The Asheville Affiliates raises money for local nonprofits through these events.

Lee’s Hoagie House, a restaurant chain in Pennsylvania, lists Asheville as a new location for one of its eateries on its website. In a story last week about a change in ownership at The Southern Kitchen and Bar on Lexington Avenue, Mountain Xpress reporter Jonathan Ammons noted that the new owners have a connection to Lee’s Hoagie House in Philadelphia. So far, though, there’s no official word about changes at The Southern, which remains open.

-There’s a new city of Asheville website urging the passage of a $73 million bond package. The bond questions will be on the ballot this November.

The Asheville Darkroom, which is in the process of moving to The Refinery space on the South Slope, is holding a fundraising event on Saturday at The Mothlight.

Asheville Community Theatre has been named the grand marshal of the Asheville Holiday Parade, which will be held Nov. 19. The application deadline to participate in the parade is Friday.

-Construction to remake an old brick structure on Riverside Drive in the River Arts District into a tourist welcome center is set to begin this month, according to a city of Asheville press release. When the renovation work is done, 14 Riverside Dr. will contain public restrooms, a deck and a kiosk to help tourists find their way.

-The city of Asheville wants designs for a new fire station to be built on Broadway.

-The city of Asheville wants more information on a pay as you throw” plan for garbage collection and recycling.

    Hrm. I grew up eating hoagies at Lee’s (if you’ve ever seen someone in town wearing a Lee’s Hoagies “Stuff Your Face” t-shirt, that’s me), but I have pretty mixed feelings about them moving down here. On the one hand, yay for freaking awesome sammitches. On the other hand, it sure would be nice to see a local restaurant concept spring up rather than an exported chain from Philly. There are wonderful regional chains all across the country, but do we really need them here? Oh well. I suppose it’s better than yet another taco place.
