Update from The Montford Rooftop Bar: “We are now offering complimentary valet parking! We’ve listened and determined that a change was necessary. Thank you all for the feedback!” Good move. A few weeks back, a loyal reader complained to me about the ridiculous parking charge – $7 – among other issues.

Former First Lady Laura Bush was spotted in Waynesville last week, reports the Smoky Mountain News. Bush, who was in town for a Blue Ridge Parkway event, dined at the Sweet Onion, according to the newspaper.

Helpmate is preparing to begin a capital campaign with the goal of raising money to expand its shelter and offer 40 more beds to victims of domestic violence.

-Somebody is planning to open a beer museum in Pittsburgh. It’s called Brew: The Museum of Beer. Asheville, why didn’t you think of this?!?

Here’s a tidbit from the Asheville Business Owners page: A new biz is holding an official launch party on Thursday at The Block Off Biltmore. Fox & Fir Design is a fresh, eco-forward apparel brand that creates designs inspired by nature. Each design helps a different local environmental non-profit.

A Kickstarter campaign has been launched by an Asheville filmmaker for a zombie flick called “Dead Brew.”

-Local filmmaker David Huff has launched a crowdfunding campaign seeking $25,000 to go toward the making of a zombie movie, called Dead Brew, based in Asheville. The movie description: “An epic hurricane hits Asheville, N.C., spiling coal ash into the city water and turning beer-drinking citizens into zombies.”

National Geographic Travel visits town and writes about the artists of Asheville.

-There’s a Reems Creek Greenway presentation coming up on Oct. 25.

-Legendary songstress Mavis Staples will play at The Orange Peel in Asheville on Nov. 13 in support of the French Broad Riverkeeper. Asheville-based artist Lyric will perform with her band as the opening act and will also perform a special acoustic set at a VIP event at PULP (The Orange Peel’s lower level private club) before the show.
