Some of what’s going around today:

-A magnitude 2.6 earthquake shook Weaverville this morning.

Henry Rollins writes: North Carolina, I Love You, But Your Governor is an Asshole.

OWL Bakery reports that it is just days away from opening at 295 Haywood Road near Beecham’s Curve. From their page on FB:

-It’s just about time to get your tubes and stand-up paddle boards out on the French Broad River. Looking for inspiration? Check out the Battle of the French Broad stand-up paddle board race. It will be held May 14-15.

New Belgium Brewing in Asheville has been holding a series of soft openings that began last week. The events are leading up to the long-awaited public opening of its tasting room on May 2.

-Speaking of craft breweries, another new Asheville brewery is planning on a May opening, reports Mountain Xpress. Habitat Tavern and Commons is located on Broadway near Moog Music Inc.

-Asheville guitar rock god Warren Haynes and his band, Gov’t Mule, will play at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino on Sept. 30 with Blackberry Smoke. Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday.

A new art studio in a new Asheville hot spot for artists will be in the spotlight in May. The studio, 22 London, is located on London Road. It will host an opening reception – its first – from 7-11 p.m. on May 13 for an exhibition titled Love, Devotion & Surrender. Asheville artists Randy Shull and Hedy Fischer, who own Pink Dog Creative in Asheville’s River Arts District, are the studio owners. More:

The exhibition Love, Devotion,& Surrender, the inaugural exhibition at 22 London, presents an uncanny array of media-based works from a unique group of internationally recognized artists. The title of the show was borrowed from the 1973 recording by Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, a tribute to John Coltrane. Yet here, the central themes splinter to merge the cinematic with sensuality, social media with spirituality, spectacle with alternative realities. The artists include: Bill Viola (US), Tony Oursler (US), Petra Cortright (US), Clayton Cubitt (US), Jen DeNike (US), Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg (Sweden), Rafael Lozano Hemmer (Mexico), Jesper Just (Denmark), and Shana Hoehn (US). As one viewer penned about the album, the same can be said about this exhibition, “insanely knotty yet intervallically transcendent.”

London Road is where London District Studios (8 London Road) recently opened its doors to the public. (London Road is also the location for Burial Beer’s highly anticipated new craft brewery.)

-Asheville restaurant Cucina 24 – one of Asheville’s best – has a lot going on. Here’s the run-down from loyal reader Donnie:

Lunch will be pretty pizza heavy. We will have a couple of salads offered, two sandwiches, one of which is a meatball sub, the other an Italian Grinder featuring a variety of our house sausages and salumi. We will have 10 pizzas on the menu all with pretty classic toppings. We will be offering caned beer, and a limited wine selection with wines that make sense with pizza. We have an awesome Dolcetto Dogliani Pianezzo for example. Service will be a bit more casual than dinner, and quick. Lunch service begins Wednesday May 4th, and the normal hours from there out will be 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday.

We are also now open seven days a week for dinner. Hours Monday through Thursday are 5:30 p.m. until, with hours Friday through Sunday 5 p.m. and on.

On the horizon for us we have:

Tiki Dinner with Cruzan Rums

We’re doing the first of our dinner version of our wildly popular late night Tiki Party.

Chef Brian will be doing a four course family style meal, all classic Polynesian dishes. He will be roasting suckling pigs for steamed buns. There will be three tiki style cocktails each with the first three courses and dessert will be served with a pour of Cruzan’s Single Barrel bottling. The cost is $50 per person, and seats are filling up quickly. Tuesday May 3rd. 6 pm cocktail hour, dinner served at 7:00.

Wicked Weed Sour Beer Dinner

We will be serving a five course, mostly family style beer dinner featuring sours from Wicked Weed’s Funkatorium.

The first course will heavily feature our house made charcuterie, paired with the only farm-house ales of the evening, all three of Wicked Weed’s Labonte ales.

The next four courses will be paired with sours, one of which Walt is bottling off un-carbonated, something that they have only one other time. The dessert course will be paired with the much sought after Red Angel, a sour that is only released on a yearly basis. The cost is $65 per person, 6:00 pm cocktail hour, 7:00 pm dinner. Again, seats will be very limited.

For either of the dinners, reservations will be required and can be made by calling the restaurant at 828.254.6170.
