ashvegas_logonew_200Some of what’s going around:

-Columnist wanted: Ashvegas is seeking a columnist to write intelligently, and from a personal point of view, about transgender issues. Please email me at [email protected].

-Shaffer studio: Asheville’s Gabriel Shaffer, a folk artist who has been killing it with mural work for everyone from tiny West Asheville cafes to big Facebook server farm’s in Rutherford County, is finally opening his own gallery in downtown.

-Color Run Asheville: The Color Run is coming to Asheville. What is the Color Run, you ask? You basically wear white, run a 5K and get plastered in colorful paint.

-MLK Day photo gallery: Carolina Public Press has great coverage of MLK Day events from earlier this week, including a great story and photo gallery by Colby Rabon.

-Wild South nominations: Wild South is seeking nominations for its sixth annual Roosevelt-Ashe Conservation Awards. “On March 21, four individuals and one business will be recognized for their Outstanding Contributions to environmental conservation in the South during the past year. The Awards will be presented at Wild South’s Green Gala in Asheville, which annually celebrates and recognizes exceptional work in conservation. Visit wildsouth.org for complete information, previous award winners and quick 2013 online applications. Awards are given in each of five categories: outstanding journalist; outstanding youth; outstanding educator; outstanding small business; and outstanding conservationist.”

-Health care navigators: Pisgah Legal Services is seeking volunteers who can offer guidance and assist individuals in signing up for new health insurance plans made available by the Affordable Care Act from January through March 31, 2014. To sign up or learn more, call Jim Carillon at Pisgah Legal Services, 828-210-3402, or email [email protected].

-Your vote matters: The Asheville Affiliates, as you know, is a local group that throws four parties a year to raise money for deserving nonprofits. Three of the four have been chosen. The last pick is up to the people. You can only vote for one of the following: Asheville Music School; NC Stage Company; T.H.E. Center for Disordered Eating of Western North Carolina; and Western North Carolina Green Building Council. Go to ashevilleaffiliates.com to vote.

Any info on where Shaffer’s studio will be downtown? I am a fan of his work and would love to visit…could not find any info on his website either.
    Thanks!
