Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Bonfire Barbecue, other Asheville restaurants, prepare to open

-Asheville restaurant update: The new Bonfire Barbecue restaurant on Patton Avenue is set to open any day now. The new Lafayette (former Local Taco) is set to open May 11 in downtown. And the new Chupacabra Latin Cafe in Reynolds Village is set for a May opening. Meantime, Buxton Hill Barbecue on the South Slope is coming together, as is the Smoky Park Supper Club on Riverside.

-Boating/paddling season: This past weekend was the unofficial kick-off of tubing/paddling season along the French Broad River through Asheville. Lots of folks got out on the river. Here’s to a fun, safe river season!

-Architectural scavenger hunt: From the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County:

The Preservation Society of Asheville is hosting an Architectural Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, May 17th. This walking tour starts at the City Building and ends near the Vance monument. It is a fund-raiser but also a very cool event educating our residents and visitors on the history and features of our many unique downtown buildings.

-D-League team in Asheville? The Charlotte Observer reports that the Charlotte Hornets want to start an NBA D-League team, and one of the cities on their list is Asheville.

-UNCA commencement: From a UNCA press release:

With 465 graduates receiving degrees, UNC Asheville will celebrate May 2015 Commencement, beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, on the campus Quad. UNC Asheville’s Class of 2015, which also includes 257 December graduates and 34 August graduates, numbers 756.

-SAT prep classes: From a UNCA press release:

Registration is now open for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) prep classes offered by UNC Asheville. Classes will meet on the UNC Asheville campus. Cost for the prep class is $295, which includes 18 hours of contact time and all study materials. For more information or to register, visit agc.unca.edu/sat or call 828.250.2353.

-Shindig: Dates announced. From a press release:

The 49th Season of Shindig on the Green, a free event in the heart of downtown Asheville, with a stage show and informal jam sessions, takes place on Saturday evenings. Kicking off on June 27th this year, Shindig on the Green will be held on June 27; July 11, 18, 25; August 15, 22, 29; and September 5. The 88th Annual Mountain Dance and Folk and Festival, a ticketed event at Diana Wortham Theatre in downtown Asheville with a different show each night, takes place at 7:00 p.m. nightly, Thursday through Saturday, August 6, 7 & 8, 2015.

-Counter Culture coffee events in Asheville: From a press release:

We are excited to let you know that Counter Culture Coffee, the NC-based indie coffee roaster celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, will host Sustainable Spring 2015 all May, a series of events in the name of sustainability at each of their nine training centers nationwide. Sustainable Spring is an opportunity for Counter Culture to make tangible connections between the global issues in coffee-producing communities in which they work so closely, and the communities in which their employees, families and customers live.

The month will culminate with a one-day open house on Saturday, May 30th from 10am-2pm. The free and open-to-the-public event will be an awareness-raising day about sustainability and green living, showcasing the work of individuals and organizations doing inspiring work in the communities around Counter Culture’s training centers.

The Asheville Training Center (77 Broadway Street) will host the following presenters:

Sierra Nevada: Cheri Chastain, Sustainability Manager
Asheville Water Resources Department: Leslie Carreiro, Director

Additional Sustainable Spring events taking place throughout the month of May include:
Friday, 5/8 at 10am: Tasting@Ten
The company’s popular weekly tastings open to the public.

Friday, 5/15: Company-Wide Volunteer Day
Operations will be closed and staff will spend the day volunteering with Emma Community Gardens Children First Program.

Wednesday, 5/27 from 3-4pm: Pro Dev: The Complexities of Quality
A discussion of coffee quality and how it relates to the environment and sustainability.

    Loved it when hockey was here. Season ticket holder and made it to most games. Obviously not the world’s greatest level, but always exciting and spirited.

    One game ended with so many game misconducts that each team only their team on the ice and 4 or 5 other guys on the bench. Lots of tired guys out there.
