More of what’s going around:

Bar Grasso, an Italian sub shop, is coming to 643 Haywood Road inWest Asheville, the location of the just-closed Arancini wine bar. That didn’t take long.

-On Friday, May 27, Franklin School of Innovation 8th-grade students will partner with Asheville GreenWorks to clean a 2-mile portion of Hominy Creek during FSI’s Celebration of Learning, according to a press release. The event goes from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Here’s more:

As an EL Education school, Franklin looks for opportunities for our students to partner with and learn from local experts, engaging in real work and service of value to our community. Over the past weeks, with the help of Asheville’s GreenWorks, students have been collecting data on pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, and phosphates in Hominy Creek, investigating whether the creek can support aquatic life and the safety and potability of creek water. Data will be shared with environmental groups working to improve water quality throughout our region.

The stream clean-up is the culmination of a six-week study. Along with water quality, students also researched the impact of water on the history of Buncombe County and the lives of its residents. Before they hit the creek on Friday, students will share science projects, math data, their collective website project, and skits. We invite interested members of the community to share in this celebration of learning and participate in the stream-clean up.

-Want to help design one of Asheville’s high-profile public spaces? Then come out to a meeting Thursday. Here’s the info from PARC, an advocacy group that wants to see a public park on a piece of city-owned property across from the U.S. Cellular Center:

The community is invited to a public presentation on the theories, tools and techniques successful cities use when studying opportunities for vibrant and inviting public spaces. The presentation is the first component in the visioning process set for the City-owned property at 68-76 Haywood Street and 33-37 Page Avenue. Opportunities for community participation over the course of the process willalso be presented.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 19, and will take place in the US Cellular Center Banquet Room. Placemaking experts Ethan Kent and Philip Winn from Project for Public Spaces will share key components of great public spaces. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with the community. This event is free and open to the public.

In March 2016, Asheville City Council approved a public visioning process for City-owned property located on Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. The process is being facilitated by Asheville Design Center in collaboration with City staff and a City Council-appointed advisory team. Community engagement efforts will inform a long-term vision for the properties while also serving to identify opportunities for temporary installations to enliven the space in the short-term.

I believe Bar Grasso is run by the same people who started Arancini.
