More of what’s going around:

Asheville police have been issuing new citations to some of the people involved in last week’s sit-in protest inside the lobby of the Asheville Police Department. The group was protesting the police shooting of a man on July 2. On the second day of the protest, Asheville police arrested 7 people who refused to move from the Police Department lobby.

Along with the sit-in, some protesters stopped traffic in the middle of downtown Asheville at the intersection of Patton Avenue and Biltmore Avenue/Broadway. In a statement, Asheville police said they’ve gotten so many complaints about the July 21 traffic mess that they’ve decided to issue citations.

The protesters say the police action is a form of intimation. Officers have been going to their residences, knocking on doors and issuing the citations.

A police officer shot and killed Jai “Jerry” Williams, 35, near the Deaverview public housing complex on July 2 after police responded to reports of gunshots at another public housing complex, Pisgah View. An officer located Williams and pulled him over. Williams exited his vehicle and “displayed” a weapon, according to police. A group of about 50 protesters marched from Asheville’s Montford neighborhood to the lobby of the Asheville Police Department downtown and staged a sit-in protest to call attention to the shooting.

-The Los Angeles this week published a story about the Asheville police shooting of Williams under the headline “What happens when a white officer shoots a black man, but no one releases a video?”

-There’s a bikini bike wash this Saturday at Harley-Davidson of Asheville. The party, which includes complementary wings from Wild Wing Cafe, starts at noon. Take exit 59 off Interstate 40 in Swannanoa to get to the Harley dealership.

RiverLink continues to search for a new executive director to replace founder Karen Cragnolin, who announced she was stepping down earlier this year after 30 years at the helm.

-There’s a new brewery coming to Bryson City. It’s called Mountain Layers Brewing.

-There’s an Asheville Pokemon Go Bar Crawl happening July 30.

The Incredible Asheville Urban Odyssey is coming up on Aug. 21. Here’s more:

Teams of four will depart the Mill Room every 30 minutes and follow a series of clues to both hidden and well known Asheville locations.

At each location, a team member must complete a specific task before receiving their next clue (each team member will complete two tasks).

After a team completes its eighth task they will make their way back to the Mill Room for their final task. After that is completed they check in and receive their time.

The use of smart phones is not only allowed but necessary. Teams must follow all traffic regulations and those who don’t will be penalized (we will have spies all over the course).

The event will include all of the downtown and teams can expect to walk/run between 2 and 3 miles during their journey.

You have 3 hours to find the 8 locations and complete the 8 challenges.

You think that 30+ days in prison is the appropriate punishment for blocking traffic? Wow.

Who knows, Peck? Maybe you and Moffitt can get them together and teach a math class: How many internet trolls does it take for Moffitt to win an election? Apparently a lot more than just you.

In other news, the 4th Circuit just tossed out NC’s voter suppression law as one of the most brazen acts of legislative racial discrimination in modern American history: “the most restrictive voting law North Carolina has seen since the era of Jim Crow.”

‘We recognize that elections have consequences, but winning an election does not empower anyone in
any party to engage in purposeful racial discrimination. When a legislature dominated by one party has dismantled barriers to African American access to the franchise, even if done to gain votes, “politics as usual” does not allow a legislature dominated by the other party to re-erect those barriers. The record evidence is clear that this is exactly what was done here.’

It also notes the role of Tom Apodaca in bringing that bill to the Senate as soon as VRA preclearance was lifted. Even Don Yelton’s Daily Show bigot eruption got a shout-out in the judgement.

Some people just always seem to end up on the wrong side of history, don’t they, Mouthpiece?
