Kay Olsen has officially dropped her challenge to Brian Turner for House District 116. I’ve suspected all along that she was merely a placeholder, a fake candidate. Let’s see what the Buncombe County GOP does now. That’s three important races now that they have no candidate for, and the election is four months away.

I know. Call the NCGA back into emergency session, and pass a law requiring… oh, hell I don’t know – something that keeps people in Buncombe County and everywhere in North Carolina for that matter, from realizing that the BCGOP is a clown car with very few clowns in it.

Did Kay Olsen deliberately file for NC House District 116, with no intention of actually running? That’s the way it looks. She never raised a dime, never appeared at any campaign events, never even put up a website, and let the Buncombe County GOP handle her paperwork. And now, 7 months and $750 in fines later, she quietly says “never mind”.

Starting back in January, we heard the rumors that she was recruited simply to file, so that she could then drop out, and the BCGOP could insert someone else into the race at their leisure, long after the filing deadline had closed.

Or was the plan to never actually have anyone be the sacrificial lamb to Brian Turner, but just give us all the illusion of a race? Keep him from straying too far to the left or cozying up to the City too close on this issue or that?

Given the antics of the BCGOP, especially in that district, I think either scenario is plausible. But either way, if it’s true – it’s a deliberate fraud on the voters.

A reader can certainly ignore them, but on the home page, when one sees a new comment about a topic, you click, hoping for a new view and find just another old poke at Peck. Apparently, as soon as the first GOPer spoke out, someone went and got Apodaca. He came over and loomed in the House gallery, glaring at the House members. The second half of this bash-a-thon was done with him standing there watching.

If you have some time free, maybe while you do housework, etc., put this on & listen to the NC House do the right thing for once:

Meanwhile, who will ask Chuck McGrady what he meant by saying this on the House floor today, during the debate on Asheville district elections?:

“I know for a fact that the Mayor and Council was asked to do this re-districting, and for whatever set of reasons, over whatever set of time, it hasn’t gotten done.”

Thanks, Barry. I got a bit of it on WCQS’s website this morning. Looking forward to hearing the full debate.

I sorta feel bad for Gloaty McGloatface. He was just so chuffed that Apodaca was ramming this bill down the throat of Asheville. Poor fella.

Asked by who, Chuck? You’re suggesting they were under some sort of obligation to someone to institute district elections, but failed to do so, and that justifies Apodaca forcing it on them.

Will no media person in this town gather up the courage to ask him a simple question: “Could you explain that statement, Rep. McGrady?”

I don’t know what’s more remarkable about that audio: the number of principled GOP reps who saw it as a naked power play by Apodaca both over Asheville and within the GA, or the number of witless stooges who spoke up to support the bill by reading off scripts written in crayon. I’m not sure some of the supporters could identify a mountain from a thousand paces.

(One rep implied that Apodaca demanded members’ votes for the redistricting in exchange for Senate support for their own pet issues.)

Bravo to Susan Fisher, John Ager and Bryan Turner. There’s clearly a decent amount of goodwill for the Buncombe delegation.

BTW, I just heard that Apodaca was not merely glaring from the balcony, he came down on the House floor and was twisting arms during the debate. And they still voted his abusive powergrab bill down, right to his face.

(One rep implied that Apodaca demanded members’ votes for the redistricting in exchange for Senate support for their own pet issues.)

Exactly. And what happened after Apodaca got the finger from 24 GOP reps? He went back over to the Senate and pulled the plug on the Regulatory Reform bill, where a lot of those pet issues were waiting. That bill (which almost certainly had a number of “reforms” those of us on the left would prefer not to have enacted) is dead now, out of spite from Apodaca.

Yes, the maps will survive any legal challenge. But there won’t be one.

First, the city is out of money. It is trying to borrow $74 million now. That’s 48 percent of the current budget. Second, they’ve lost every case they’ve brought and they would lose this one too. What a waste of tax dollars these progressives have been. Someone should spank them, and right good.

Also, the proposed district map is a good start. They’ll have to be redrawn anyway when the city loses District 6.

Does she really? Considering districts, and putting it to the vote of the people of AVL, is not anything like agreeing with your friend Apodaca’s authoritarian travesty that even his fellow Republicans couldn’t stomach.

            Poor Tim.

And she’s not considering it because it’s a good idea, but rather to get ahead of more Republican heavy-handed meddling in the city’s affairs.

I wonder if the issue of district elections will be on the referendum in November along with the reckless bond issue. City council has the statutory authority to do so and it’s what they have called for. They can do district elections or somebody can do it for them. I prefer the latter.

No, the city is trying to borrow money when interest rates are at historic lows in order to accelerate large-scale capital projects. Like a business would. Or like how normal people borrow three times their annual income for something called ‘a mortgage’ and end up owning houses.

Once more, that lie has been disproven time and time again. The City charges ratepayers the cost of running the water system, and not one dime more. Your own Chuck McGrady asked you to stop telling that lie a couple of years ago: bit.ly/14J4yBL

MSD’s own study showed that the water system would be less efficient if ripped from the City. But don’t let facts get in your way, Mr. Wrong.

That must be why the City is so desperate to keep their grubby little hands on our water system and spend millions of taxpayer dollars on fruitless lawsuit after fruitless lawsuit: because it provides no benefit to the General Fund. AT ALL.

Has anybody else bought your line? Really.

Tell me, Barry, oh, Barry, when the city says it will take a financial hit with the loss of our water system, what does that mean in your world?

You keep saying the City is “stealing” from water ratepayers. That’s a huge lie. By law, they charge what it costs to operate the system. It’s a “hit” in the sense that the water system is one of the few City departments that pay their own way for things like accountants, legal, IT, etc., helping to make the entire City govt. operate more efficiently. Like every City that operates a public water service. Calling that “stealing” is one more pure lie from the House of Mr. Wrong.

And it’s not just my line – listen again to GOP Rep. Chuck McGrady asking you to stop telling that lie.

So, you’re saying that the city has not diverted money intended for the water system into the city’s General Fund? But isn’t that why MSD only offered $57 million? Odd, isn’t it?
