Ashvegas: The City You Love. The News You Want.Some of what’s going around:

-Word on the street is that Lafayette restaurant, which opened just last spring, has closed for the winter.

-Ray’s Weather says to expect snow flurries tonight around Asheville, as we experience the coldest weather of the winter. It’s gonna be harsh, especially coming off one of the mildest Decembers on record here.

-ArtSpace charter school is still recovering from a devastating flood just before the new year.

-PennyCup Coffee has opened a new location in the YMI building on Market Street in downtown Asheville.

-The Oakley Elementary PTO is bringing the Harlem Wizards to UNC Asheville’s Justice Center on Feb. 5 to raise money for the school. Tickets start at $8.

-Here’s the list of the top 20 best-selling books in 2015 at Malaprop’s in Asheville. Titles by local authors figure heavily in the list, as you might expect.

-Beautiful hand-carved wooden spoons and much much more by local maker Anneliesse McKee at spoonandhook.

-The sixth annual Kenilworth celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is set for Jan. 18 at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church 123 Kenilworth Rd, according to a press release. More:

Potluck from 5:30-6:30pm in Kenilworth Center 4 Chiles Ave. (directly behind church) and the program will begin at 6:30pm in the church sanctuary.

The program for the evening is “Seeking Common Ground: An interfaith conversation on discrimination, fear and healing.” Esteemed panelists for the evening include Imam Taha from the Islamic Center of Asheville, Rabbi Justin Goldstein from Congregation Beth Israel, James E. Lee III Associate Minister of St. John A Missionary BaptistChurch, and Rev. Dr. Allen Smith of Kenilworth Presbyterian Church.

The evening will be moderated by Dr. Dolly Jenkins-Mullen, Associate Professor in Political Science at UNCA. Marvin Chambers a founding member of A.S.C.O.R.E. (Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equality) and an icon of the Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina will be hosting.

DJ Profe$$ah G. will be spinning great tunes, there will be craft projects for children and lots more! Join us as we celebrate religious and cultural diversity in our community and learn from the wisdom of our neighbors.

-WCQS reports that more than 100 doctors and nurses at Mission Hospital are unsure about their jobs after the hospital indicated it would end a contract with the company that employs them.

-Tickets are on sale for the Asheville Fringe Festival, set for Jan. 21-24. More:

Asheville Fringe arts fans should also attend the The Fringe Festival Kick Off Madness on January 16, presented by Asheville Grit, Asheville Brewing & Zapow! Asheville Grit will be kicking off the Fringe freakiness at MG Road from 5-7 pm. Fringe fans, Grit and Ashvegas bloggers, and members of the curious public are invited to come and learn about the Fringe Arts Festival’s boundary-pushing schedule this year while enjoying small bites and libations.

Then at 7 pm head to Zapow Gallery for free beer samples from Asheville Brewing and the opening of The Fringe Art Show. Visual artists join in on the fun for this year’s Fringe at this special event where the ZaPow artists push the boundaries of illustration and 2d visual narrative to the edge and over. Expect the unexpected as Fringe Festival artists may pop-up and do short performances in the gallery space.

-The nonprofit RiverLink recently announced that it had been awarded $510,000 in three grants from the N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund. RiverLink will use the money for three projects: a research-based stormwater management project, a stream restoration project and a watershed master plan

-Whatever happened to the plan to name the plaza area outside the Asheville Art Museum “SECU Plaza” ?

      Ahh, no context, just insults, the sign of a great discourse. You know, instead of lashing out at things you don’t understand, try to engage in a dialogue. We as Americans are far more complex then your simplistic “us vs. them” approach can describe. Do you really think those of the political left are are imbeciles? That sort of blanket statement could be interpreted as originating from one of shallow thinking, and surely your thought process runs deeper than that?
