-Anchor Bar and Kitchen is the name of a new restaurant planned for old Buffalo Nickel space in West Asheville. Barley’s owner Jimi Rentz has pulled construction permits for the new restaurant.
-Latino Heat, a food truck in #Asheville, is planning a brick-and-mortar location at 2619 Sweeten Creek Road, a former Pizza Hut location (as loyal reader John corrects me).
-Asheville City Council will hold a public hearing at its meeting tonight to hear from residents about the issue of amending the City of Asheville Charter to provide for six single-member electoral districts governing the nomination and election of City Council members.
-Donations poured into Brother Wolf Animal Rescue on Monday after it reported that someone had stolen 2,000 pounds of dog and cat food, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.
-Wicked Weed, which has been making donations in the amount of $50,000 and $100,000 to area nonprofits recently, has also given money to the WNC AIDS Project, MANNA FoodBank, Habitat For Humanity Asheville, Haywood Street Congregation Downtown Welcome Table, LEAF and HATCH, with more donations in coming weeks, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.
-Asheville police continue to investigate the shooting death on Sunday afternoon of a 20-year-old man at Pisgah View Apartments. Police are seeking a juvenile suspect in the case and have issued a first-degree murder warrant, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.
-Graphic novelist Hope Larson has moved back to Asheville, the Mountain Xpress reports. Larson, who grew up in Asheville, is an Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist perhaps best known for her adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, Madleine L’Engle’s juvenile science fiction classic. Welcome back, Hope!
-Bryson City is really pulling out all the stops to celebrate the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21. The city has a full weekend full of events, including an outdoor movie and music leading up to Monday, which will include a train ride to an eclipse viewing destination and music from several Asheville bands, including Andrew Scotchie and the River Rats, Lyric, Grandpa’s Cough Medicine and The Company Store.
-Two finalists have been chosen for the position of equity and inclusion manager at the city of Asheville, according to a city press release. The person in the newly created job “will lead the City of Asheville’s effort to expand equity in city services and programs, and will be dedicated to helping the City achieve meaningful progress by evaluating the delivery of City programs, services and its decision-making in order to operationalize equity,” according to the release. Residents can meet the finalists between 4:30-6:30 p.m. on July 10 at the banquet hall inside the U.S. Cellular Center.
