jude_law_2014UPDATE: Jude Law had lunch today (June 18) at The Med in downtown Asheville, an Ashvegas spy reports.

Tuesday, June 17: Actor Jude Law has been spotted around Asheville the past couple of days. The Lexington Avenue restaurant Bouchon posted the following on its page on FB:

Yes, it’s true. Jude Law was in Bouchon last night (Monday). He’s researching his role as Thomas Wolfe for the new movie, Genius,
based on A. Scott Berg’s award-winning biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius, which you can probably order from Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe

And today, there’s this from Twitter and Joe Syverson: ‏

@joesyverson We just walked by Jude Law… Near the chocolate bar… Loving Asheville.

A friend also told me that Law was doing some Wolfe research at Pack Library in downtown Asheville.

Here’s the WLOS story about Jude Law spotted in Asheville.

Law recently replaced Michael Fassbender in the biopic, called Genius. It is adadpted from A Scott Berg’s biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius. It tells the story of Perkins (played by Colin Firth), a renowned book editor.

From my earlier post about the movie:

I haven’t heard much yet about the potential impact of this movie on Asheville and Western North Carolina. With such a top-notch cast (Michael Grandage is directing; this is his debut), it seems likely that the movie will shine a bright light on all things Wolfe. A few years ago, the filming of The Hunger Games in Western North Carolina brought our lush mountains back to the minds of movie location scouts in a big way (as well as a big business incentives for movie-makers), but a movie about Wolfe the writer will highlight Asheville in a cultural way. Should be fun to watch.

Thanks to loyal reader Jen for the heads-up.

It might be the former location of a saloon mentioned by Wolfe in his novel Look Homeward Angel, and he was researching Wolfe’s old haunts.

      F. Scott Fitzgerald stayed there too mid 1920’s – to research the annoying noveau riche Mcmansion owning antagonists in WNC for “The Great Gatsby”. The post Civil War ex-slave owning 1%ers. Character study and all.

Have you checked with the folks at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial to see when/if he’s visiting there?

Are you new around here, or were you just feeling especially grumpy yesterday? A rumor of celebrity presence in town has always been worthy of an Ashvegas post, even when that “celebrity” is someone as marginal as a finalist on *The Bachelor*. And frankly, I’m not sure I can come up with a more appropriate post for a local blog than the fact that a big Hollywood star was seen around town working on a film with deep local connections.

I would beg to disagree-rewarding fame for its own sake isn’t my bag. And please notice I take no issue with his acting skills. Fawning over a movie version of a book about a local author who was villified in his own home town for exposing elements of small town petty gossip does strike me as a tad ironic.

Who is asking you to reward anything? Or doing any fawning? All I’m doing is pointing out how ridiculous it is to take a local interest blog to task for reporting something that isn’t “newsworthy,” when even the real news, like WLOS, is reporting the exact same story.

And the Thomas Wolfe House was designated as a National Landmark in 1971, and he’s been a touchstone of Asheville tourism advertising for decades. I think the town’s pretty much over his scandalous exposes by now . . .

WLOS is ‘real news’? Oh boy, I think you just answered your own question. You do see my point about gossiping over a Thomas Wolfe biopic after he exposed the same thing in this very town? You don’t think that’s even a bit funny? (Funny as in humorous).

I’m actually reading Ashevegas for ‘real news’
(a subjective term indeed) these days instead of the Mountain X which developed a similar rose colored glasses style of reporting after losing most of their staff. For the most part, I’ve been happy with this site. Now if only Ashevegas would carry Brent Brown’s cartoons.
