cranston_2014UPDATE July 28: Actor Bryan Cranston was in Asheville for the private memorial service of family friend Louan Gideon, who died in February. (The service was held in Black Mountain.) Gideon was a former television actress with a long career  on the soap Search for Tomorrow, as well as appearances on everything from Third Rock from the Sun and Beverly Hills 90210 to Nightcourt. Gideon, who moved to Asheville to care for her mother, fought breast cancer and became active in a number of cancer-related causes.

Original post July 25: Actor Bryan Cranston, one of the stars of the hit TV show Breaking Bad, was spotted at Trader Joe’s in Asheville on Friday afternoon. The unconfirmed sighting was delivered via Twitter from @blogasheville:

Holy CRAP. Pretty sure we just saw Bryan Cranston in Trader Joe’s. #Heisenberg #WalterWhite #BreakingBad

And @bigfootbarefoot:

Heisenberg #walterwhite was just in trader joes asheville @AshevilleBlog @BlogAsheville

No word on what Cranston might be doing in Asheville. There is a big Hollywood movie shooting in Asheville this summer, a movie starring Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis and others. But as far as I know, Cranston hasn’t been connected to that production.

Cranston played the meth-cooking high school chemistry teacher Walter White in the blockbuster Breaking Bad, which wrapped up on AMC earlier this year. The Walter White character’s drug dealing nickname was Heisenberg.

If this is news, I think I may retire for reading the news.

Well, apparently here it is what passes for news as every week there are lots of confirmed rumors are spotting of “celebrities.”

Anyone else remember the time Tom Cruise and Nicole Kiddman bought a house in Biltmore Forest, or Town Mountain, or Beaver Lake, or Grove Park, or….

Asheville is strange place. We fancy ourselves so sophisticated, and so above the concerns of the mere mortals who make up the population of the rest of the world yet we are obsessed with having our home validated as worthy by playing up every absurd fourth hand rumor of some alleged celebrity gracing us with their presence.

Yeah, I agree. From some comments it might be inferred that Asheville has finally reached a critical tipping point in not caring about a famous person in town as it is now almosts a daily occurrence. I read a comment from Sanford in the article about Gannett Press where he responded to a question to as why there isn’t enough hard news in Ashevegas- advertising costs won’t let him bring hard news to the table apparently. Sad, as plenty of newsy stuff happens here and ACT/WLOS/MtnX doesn’t quite cut it either sometimes for ‘real’ news.

Pretty sad we all fawn over an actor here to attend a friend’s funeral too. I’ll bet he really appreciates all those ‘hey can we take a selfie together?’ requests.

The rumors are true, Cranston and Ceaser Millan are teaming up to do a mockumentary show about drug dealers and their hunting dogs- it’s called Meth Lab.
