As Chaucer once said, “There is an end to everything, to good things as well.” Sadly, one of the good things in my life will be coming to a close by the end of April. In the last few weeks, I have been fortunate to benefit from the wisdom of friends, family, employees, business owners and other professionals. After much thinking and reflecting, talking and listening, I have come to a decision about Montford Books. The brick and mortar part of the business, at 31 Montford Ave., will close in April, while the online aspect of our bookselling will continue. This decision presents a mix of feelings (including sadness and loss) but the overwhelming one is that of gratitude. For over 4 years I have been able to fulfill a dream, and my heart is full of appreciation for that. It has been a joy to share this space with so many delightful people; to host various events, meetings and classes. Store staff Valerie, Mary (and I) have often heard folks say “what a great variety of books” and “there is such a pleasant atmosphere here.” Indeed, it has seemed that our little shop has been an oasis of calm, as people leave the outside world behind.
Much has been said about the devastating effects caused by e-books and big box stores. Personally, I believe there is room for coexistence. That said, it is absolutely essential to support locally owned and independent bookstores, whether you live in the Asheville area or elsewhere. Local businesses are the heartbeat of quality communities.
If you have store credit with us, please make every effort to use it as soon as possible. The tentative last date to use store credit is APRIL 16, or sooner as circumstances change.

Please note, the last day to bring in books for trade: Saturday, March 16
Feel free to call 828.285.8805 or send an e-mail to [email protected] with any questions.

Updates re: special events, sales and the final closing date will be posted on our website, Facebook and the e-newsletter. We are still here for a few weeks, so please come see us and take home a few treasures.
It has been an unforgettable experience. A HUGE THANKS to all who shared the adventure: employees, customers, writers, artists and musicians.
With warmest regards,
Kay Manley

So sorry to hear about this! Kay is everything a bookseller should be: a knowledgable book lover with a strong community spirit. Montford Books will be missed!
