Asheville Sister Cities hosting art exhibit, community conversation featuring representatives from Nigerian sister city

Asheville Sister Cities invites the public to meet representatives from our sister city of Osogbo, Nigeria at “The Art of Diplomacy,” an exhibit and community conversation about the marketability of traditional arts in the contemporary art market, on April 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Tannery Gallery in the River Arts District. There will be refreshments, drumming, music by Juan con Clave and friends, and a special Butoh performance, “Pledge,” by local artist Julie Becton Gilliam.

The five delegates from Osogbo arrived on March 30 and will be in town through April 8. They include professionals from the fields of medicine, education and imports/exports. While here, they’ll tour area businesses; participate in talks about public health, tech leadership and global education; and attend a city council meeting for a reaffirmation of the Sister Cities agreement between Asheville and Osogbo.

Tannery Gallery is located at 339 Old Lyman St. in the River Arts District. This event is hosted by the ASCI Osogbo committee and artists Jeremy Russell, Valeria Watson-Doost and Brit Castañeda. For more information, email [email protected], or visit the Facebook event page here.

Nigeria has joined many other African countries in passing draconian anti LGBT laws. As citizens of a progressive enlightened community like Asheville, we should be sending a clear signal to those haters that they are not welcome here. This is an opportunity to make a clear statement that jailing, beating, or murdering anyone suspected of being gay is a clear violation of human rights and there are consequences. The City should not be rolling out the welcome mat to a delegation from a country that uses both the Muslim and Christian religions to oppress a vulnerable population. Send a message home: we don’t condone hate!

Welcome to Asheville, Sister City Delegation! ArtSpace Charter School is presently showing a private African Art Exhibit on loan from a local collection and would love an opportunity to share this exhibit, to have the delegation meet with the collectors, and tour this public charter school specializing in arts integration during the delegation’s visit to Asheville. The school is on Spring Break (week of March 30 through April 6) but is open to the delegation at their convenience or on April 7 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.. Please let us know if there is any possibility of this visit. We look forward to meeting the delegation. (828) 298-2787 or (828) 423-2196. Thank you.
