apd_badge_2013An Asheville Police Department officer shot and killed a man suspected of breaking into a home in the Camelot subdivision Sunday morning. Asheville Police Chief William Anderson said the incident is under investigation. Mountain Xpress has the story here.

The break-in Sunday morning was the latest in a wave of break-ins happening across Asheville. Police are scrambling to put an end to it. Last week, they announced the arrest of six suspects in connection with a dozen break-ins in the Kennilworth neighborhood.

Two people were arrested and charged following a home invasion on Osborne Road in north Asheville. A woman and a masked man with a knife entered the home, beat up a woman inside and stole $2,500, according to reports.

There has also been a string of break-ins just outside the city limits in the Estelle Park neighborhood west of downtown. Two men were recently arrested in connection with those break-ins.

What can you do? Make sure your doors are locked and that your windows are closed and locked. Make sure your garage door is closed and locked. Make sure your car windows are rolled up and doors are locked. Most of these suspects are looking for the easy target – a cracked window or an open door.

The Citizen-Times has not done a good job of investigating what might have gone wrong in A.J. Marion’s life that led to his apparent burglary attempt and then being shot by the police in pursuit. A story by Sabian Warren and Bob Berghaus quoted a distant cousin and former football teammates, some of them now in college, who remembered Marion as “a legend” at his high school. But they do not appear to have attempted to dig any deeper. Why haven’t reporters at either C-T or MX interview close family members and others who might know about the apparently downward trajectory of this young man’s life? Could Ashvegas take on some investigative journalism and try to give your readers the real story? It would be a public service and would show how valuable this blog is in getting real news and information to the public.

So they deserve a death sentence for B&E? Seems rather draconian.

They do when they refuse to drop their weapon. Cops are trained to neutralize the threat. That’s what this officer did, no more, no less. Deal with it.

Don’t miss the point: the whole situation is really sad, especially the loss of human life for stuff and money. Not to mention the fear and frustration that must go along with a home invasion.

Get to know your neighbors, and look out for each other.

    KarlwithaK,

I agree, the Democrats and Republicans are both extremely corrupt. I am an independent, I can’t stand either party. But the tea party is not a political party, it is a corporate-backed movement designed to further the agendas of the rich on the backs of the poor. Removing the social safety net isn’t about being left or right, it’s about wrong or right. We can’t advance as a society if a large percentage of our population is sick, hungry, and homeless. We must find a way to govern ourselves, and the first step is to find a way to keep the influence of money out of government. The tea baggers have done a great job of manipulating poor and middle class folks into voting against their own best interests.

Go f-yourself for even attempting to contribute the recent crime activity to any one political party! Stop acting like one political party is full of corruption, and the other one is worthy of meeting Christ! They’re all bums! They all are corrupt! And they ALL have an agenda of their own that they’re trying to establish…so cut the bull!!!
(Machiavelli once stated, “Politics and crime are the same thing!) LEARN FROM THAT!

I think you misunderstood, he was referring to the act of taking away all the safety nets to help those in need. When there is no where to turn and no help to receive, people get desperate.

I’d like to add a suggestion as to what you can do. You can vote out the crazy tea party people who are intent on destroying our social safety net. I don’t know if any of these specific robbery attempts are linked to poverty, but I do know that as long as people are denied the ability to afford a place to live and to put food on their plates, they will be driven to take desperate measures. This is not the America I grew up in.
