lauren_tamayo_olympics_ashevilleHere’s the press release:

On Tuesday, March 19th at the UNC-Asheville Kimmel Arena, Asheville residents and well-known members of the international competitive cycling community, Lauren and Mike Tamayo, will address more than 150 high school students and 200 business and community leaders.

Joining forces with Junior Achievement, Western North Carolina Region (WNC), the Tamayos will host the popular annual Business Ethics Luncheon, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Topics for discussion at this year’s well-known event will center on Ethics and the Business of Competitive Sports. High school students from several mountain counties are invited to participate in this education and business summit each year. To prepare for the discussion, students complete essays addressing an ethical dilemma linked to the event theme.

At the luncheon, business leaders and high school students are integrated as they hear the keynote address and then participate in lively roundtable discussions prompted by the essay topics. This unique program is based upon the JA Job Shadow curriculum, which provides engaging, academically enriching and experiential learning opportunities to high school students.

Lauren Tamayo is an Olympic Silver Medalist in Women’s Team Pursuit cycling, and in 2010 set a new world record in a pursuit team event in Mexico. She has been cycling since the age of six, and earned many athletic awards while completing both her high school diploma and undergraduate degree. Mike Tamayo is the General Manager and Team Director of the United Healthcare Pro Cycling Team, a growing 45-person operation which is quickly gaining prominence as it races around the globe.

Individual tickets are available for the luncheon, which is supported by in part by Charles Schwab, Wells Fargo, Pulliam Properties, UNC-Asheville, Dixon Hughes Goodman and Miller Historic Motorcars.
