The new Asheville Museum of Science on Tuesday accepted a $27,820 grant from Wells Fargo, with the money to go toward buying science equipment such as a Van De Graaf generator, a wireless spectrometer, a laptop computer, a 3-D printer and more.amos_dinosaur_asheville_2016

The Asheville Museum of Science is the new name of the former Colburn Earth Science Museum, which is moving out of the basement of Pack Place and into an 8,000-square-foot space in the Wells Fargo building on Patton Avenue. The new location and name signal big changes for the nonprofit science center, which is widening its approach by creating permanent exhibits that will focus on earth sciences with its Hall of Minerals, as well as Southern Appalachian forestry, as well as dinosaurs and fossils.

The Asheville Museum of Science will host a benefit from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday at The Boathouse, 350 Riverside Dr. (next to Smoky Mountain Supper Club). The “Under the Stars” fundraiser will include local food and beer, a silent auction and music by Lyric.

The goal of the “Under the Stars” event is to help the museum reach a campaign goal of $1.3 million toward the family-friendly, state-of-the-art AMOS facility.

About the Museum

The Colburn Earth Science Museum ignites imagination, enhances science capability, and unlocks innovation. For more than 55 years, the Colburn Museum has fostered an appreciation for the Earth and its resources and environments through its exhibits, educational programming and the care of its collection. This summer, the Colburn will embark on a new journey as the Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS). The museum will relocate to the Wells Fargo building adjacent to Pritchard Park and expand its mission beyond earth science to incorporate a broader reach of all types of science, including chemistry, technology, engineering, biology and climate science.
