Asheville Mardi Gras ElvisMark your calendars, folks. This is always a good time:

The 9th Annual Asheville Mardi Gras Parade will be rolling down the streets of downtown Asheville on Sunday, February 7th, 3:05pm, rain or shine. This year’s parade theme is “Saints vs. Sinners” and will feature live bands, festooned floats and costumed revelers. The parade will be stepping off from Haywood and Wall Street, located in downtown Asheville. Immediately following the Parade will be “The Queen’s Ball” held at Pack’s Tavern located at 20 S. Spruce St, downtown. This event is open to the public and will feature live music of The Digs and Asheville Second Line, roving performers and a photo booth.

In addition to the Mardi Gras Parade, the Annual Cajun CookOff will be held this Jan. 31 from 2 p.m. to p.m., at the Millroom, 66 Asheland Ave, where attendees can taste samples of 20 or more Louisiana inspired dishes created by Asheville chefs, and vote on their favorites. Bayou Diesel will take the stage in addition to a silent auction and roving performers. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned food to benefit Manna Food Bank. Tickets are $15, or $5 for AMG Members and can be purchased at the event. Memberships are available online at www.ashevillemardigras.org.

This year’s Mardi Gras Royals, Queen Sara Widenhouse and King Robert Bone, have each been involved with the Asheville Mardi Gras Parade in past years. “Queen Sara” was a founding member of the parade in 2007, coordinating the first two city sanctioned celebrations. “King Bone” has been a part of Asheville Mardi Gras since 2013, and serves on the planning committee. Each year on 12th night, membership gathers to take a shot at becoming new royalty. Queen Sara got the baby in her piece of king cake and persuaded King Bone to reign alongside her. Asheville Mardi Gras is a membership based social aid and pleasure club. For more information on the benefits of joining go to www.ashvillemardigras.org.
