Asheville Citizen-Times reporter Karen Chavez had the story in Friday’s newspaper, a story that USA Today has picked up. Snippet:

They call her “La Diabla.”

In Spanish it means “The Devil,” and it’s not just because Lauren Tamayo has a fondness for Mexican food.

Tamayo, 28, of Asheville, is a professional cyclist with a low-key, laid-back personality, who turns into a devilish beast when racing. And to prove just how fierce the soft-spoken blonde can be, on Friday USA Cycling named Tamayo to the U.S. Olympic team.

Tamayo is one of four women to make the track cycling team, which will compete in August at the London Olympics in the inaugural women’s team pursuit event.

“Obviously, I’m very excited,” Tamayo said by phone Friday from Mallorca, Spain, where she and her teammates will be training until heading to London.

Congratulations to Lauren!
