Maybe this is actually a secret publicity campaign to get a boost in tourist traffic to Asheville! They might be hoping the Go Topless protests pop up in every competing NC city.
With so many difficult problems confronting Asheville and the State (unemployment, balanced growth, water issues, tax rates, the environment, etc), it’s a shame that the primary thing Mr. Moffitt seems to think he can do is to pander to his repressed, conservative base. Those rallies were not offensive, and those who object don’t have to attend. No one who attended was shocked beyond belief (even the tourists who happened on the scene). And if someone wants to express herself by liberating her bust (even in front of some juvenile college boys who want to act like they never saw a female breast before), what’s the problem? Grow up! Let’s focus on IMPORTANT issues!
I can’t stand Moffitt or the majority of his agenda, but in this case he was actually responding to the wishes of the elected, technically-non-partisan-but-clearly-Democratic, Asheville city government, which requested action on this issue.
This isn’t just Republican/conservative prudishness at work, it’s a collective freakout by all the elected officials in the area and they all should be equally condemned for it.

Jabob, you’re doing yourself and the community a disservice by blaming an entire “party” of people instead of focusing on the individuals responsible for this stupidity. There are plenty of intelligent, open-minded people in the Republican Party who not so prudish and afraid of sexuality. Your being so quick to divide people into two groups does nothing to resolve social issues so that we can all get along, or at least tolerate each other. You just encourage divisiveness through hatred and fear. I agree with Smitty and Yuck-On-Man-Boobs.

Your unrefined and incoherent rebuttal may have actually strengthened my argument. So many of our social problems stem not from Democrats or Republicans specifically, but from people who adamantly believe with a closed mind that their way is the only way and that those who disagree are “idiots” or are harmful to society. Your mentality seems similar to that of many members of our Congress: “My way or the highway.” I firmly disagree with the world-view of social conservatives (Republican or not), by the way, but it’s scary to me how quick so many people are to condemn fellow citizens for holding a contrary opinion. You’re never going to change the world for the better by yelling and screaming condemnations. Instead, maybe think about what you can do to improve the situation.
I AM unrefined, and uneducated, and unrelenting in my quest to condemn all republicans, espescially the ‘fiscal’ or ‘open minded’ conservatives who intentionally convince half the country vote against their own fiscal interests by blinding them with ass backwards social concerns that the politicians and ‘fiscal’ conservatives actually don’t care about. Rather ironic that a “protest” (demonstration?) that was supposed to be fighting for a right that was already in existence may end up in the repealing of that very right.

Yeah, and someone not even from our city or even our state! Wish there could be a law to just ban people outside of the state from using Pack Square as their personal place of public protest masterbation. Such a ban would take care of the yahoo in Alambama who brought this upon us as well as those -awful- street preaches. Can we get Tim Moffit to ban those guys for us next?? That would actually be some real public service — let us keep our water & nipples and you can have all our street preachers instead. 😛

It supposedly does, but considering that women are already routinely hassled when breast feeding, the new law doesn’t bode well.
I’d love to know where you think women are routinely hassled for breast feeding, given that they are protected by law. Or are you just in tune with the media spin machine?
In recent history:
Asheville City Pools, Denny’s, or anywhere where people are uncomfortable with the fact that women are mammals who produce milk for their young.
Society has shamefully sexualized the most basic form of human nutrition and women are constantly dealing with the fall out of uncomfortable business owners and oogling men-folk when it comes to breast-feeding.
No offense Hal – but given by your name alone I don’t think you’ve ever had to deal with the issue of trying to find a safe and acceptable place to feed your baby in comfort. Women are also protected by law to not have to feed their young or milk themselves in unsanitary conditions such as a bathroom – but I’ve been in government buildings where they have told me the only place I can nurse is in a bathroom – so yet again the government does not always abide or uphold their own laws unless it suits them.
So how does this proposed legislation define woman … at what age does the nipple and areola become offensive?
