Friday marks the debut of the Asheville Citizen-Times‘ new remakeof Take5, its weekly entertainment tab. It is edited by former Verve magazine editor Jess McCuan, and with new contributor Mackensy Lunsford, the award-winning writer from Mountain Xpress, joining Citizen-Times staffers.

The publication is described as a culinary and cultural guide to Asheville.

From a special introduction from Publisher Randy Hammer on the front page of today’s Citizen-Times:

I think I know what they’re up to, but I’m not quite sure.

So I need to be careful about what I promise. But I can at least guarantee that it should be fun to watch what happens over the next several months.

A trio of newcomers to the Citizen-Times — Jess McCuan, Mackensy Lunsford and James Fisher — are joining forces with AC-T veterans Tony Kiss, Jason Sandford and Polly McDaniel to create Asheville Scene, a new section that debuts in the newspaper on Friday.

Scene replaces Take5 and will be geared toward helping locals and tourists take advantage of the region’s rich dining, entertainment and cultural offerings.

Look for a new Asheville Scene website to launch soon, with most of the content available outside the newspaper’s new pay wall.

There’s also a launch party from 5-8 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Grove Arcade. Woody Wood and Underhill Rose will perform; Strada, Curate and True Confections will serve food; and Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar will have drinks. Drinks will cost $2-5, but everything else is free.

Here’s a preview of the cover of this Friday’s edition:
