At this weekend’s Asheville Beer Expo, attendees will find the ever-present variety of local beers typically found at a craft beer festival. But there’s a distinct emphasis on getting educated about craft beer at the first-time event (a fundraiser for the Asheville Brewers Alliance), as craft brewers continue to seek ways to broaden beer events that often aren’t much more than big beer-drinking parties.

Asheville Beer Expo, set for Saturday at The Venue in downtown Asheville, will feature a day full of panel discussions focusing on everything from advice on how to start your own brewery to exploring the raw ingredients that go into making delicious beer. For $25, attendees get access to one of two three-hour sessions, as well as a commemorative glass and five tokens, with each token redeemable for one 4-ounce pour. Extra tokens can be purchased for $2 apiece.

Asheville has become home to an increasing number of craft beer festivals over the years as more and more craft breweries opened. Those early festivals usually charged a set ticket price that got an attendee a small glass that could could be refilled without a limit.

Asheville Beer Expo, with its panel discussions and token system, is really reaching beyond the drinkfest aspect. With more than 30 Western North Carolina breweries pouring their beers, as well as a host of vendors and distributors showing their wares, the event aims to impart knowledge about the craft beer-making process, and about the Asheville area’s roots in the craft beer scene

Here’s more about the Asheville Beer Expo from the press release:

Local food vendors will provide pairing samples, including Hickory Nut Gap Farms, No Evil Foods, and French Broad Chocolates.

Parking is available downtown and at nearby City of Asheville parking decks, however, Expo attendees are encouraged to find alternate ways to get to and from the event. Asheville Taxi Co. will provide $1 off vouchers for people using their service after the event.
