Jason Sandford is a reporter, writer, blogger and photographer interested in all things Asheville.
The work of a group of top Asheville artists is on display with a new show at the Asheville Area Arts Council’s gallery in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. Artist Andy Herod curated the show, Misprints, which asked participating artists to incorporate some kind of printmaking method into a collaboration or mixed media piece.
The opening reception is set for 5 p.m. Friday at the arts council gallery. The show runs through July 25.
The contributing artists are: Anna Jensen, Julie Armbruster, Kreh Mellick, Jaime Karolich, Eleanor Annand, Lucy Kruesel, Noah Prinsen, Hannah Dansie, Gus Cutty, Jason Krekel, Chris Findley, Drew Findley, Joshua Spiceland, Gabriel Shaffer and Gabriel Aucott.

Misprints is the first show in the 2015/2016 cycle of our “Point of View”, artist- curated exhibitions at the AAAC Gallery. Andy says that, “the role of curator is unfamiliar territory to me so I chose a simple theme that I did know something about; the exploration of print making. Screen-printing is central to my process. But being self-taught, I tend to use it in unconventional ways. So I thought it would be fun to ask some of my favorite local artists and crafts people, and some of their favorite local artists, to collaborate or to explore any print making method they wanted. My expectations were blown away!”
Artists were encouraged not to restrict themselves to a particular traditional process, and to either collaborate with someone of a totally different discipline or combine print making into a mixed media process. The result is a thoughtful, vibrant and unique blend of local art that ranges from paper jewelry and lanterns to functional furniture and fine art. Please join us starting June 19th for the opening of this exciting showing of tremendous local artists and makers.
This an excellent show – It feels like each artist (some I’m familiar with) were pushed by curator Andy Herod into areas they might not be normally comfortable with, and it’s fascinating to regard each artist’s ‘solution creations.’ Whatever expectations I had coming in were happily surpassed. More like this, AAAC and Kitty Love!
