Asheville apparel company Recover selling T-shirts to benefit Boston

Asheville-based Recover has teamed up with a couple of other organizations to make a special T-shirt to benefit folks in need in Boston following Monday’s bombing of the Boston Marathon. The T-shirt has been so popular that this initial run is almost sold out. Sales will close at 5 p.m. today, though another run of shirts could be forthcoming, John Riddle of Recover told me this afternoon

Here’s some background on Recover. The company makes its apparel out of 100 percent recycled cotton and polyester:

In the fall of 2009 Bill Johnston reunited with long time family friend and fellow cycling enthusiast, John Riddle. Bill was in search of a new road bike and John had one to sell. The two began riding regularly, and amidst their rides, they realized that they shared a lot of the same passions, particularly when it came to business ethics and protecting the environment. And that’s when Recover was born.

From the company’s inception in early 2010, John and Bill’s vision for Recover was to make the entire manufacturing process as ecologically friendly and socially responsible as possible, from beginning to end. With a strong textile background, John knew the possibilities of manufacturing casual comfortable garments made entirely from recycled material, and he knew that they could be made affordable. Bill, who studied textiles at NCSU, was working for an outdoor adventure company traveling the world and educating teenagers about the outdoors and was confident there was a place in the market for Recover.

At Recover’s earliest production, the two guys from North Carolina were delighted to see a product that fulfilled both their mission and their high standard for quality. As Recover gained traction in the market, they couldn’t ignore the brands growing popularity, and Bill decided to walk away from his job in outdoor education to manage Recover on a full time basis.

Meanwhile Bill’s good friend and co-worker from the adventure travel business, Timothy “Theo” Moore, had taken a serious interest in Recover. As the two were mountain biking everyday all over the Western North Carolina Mountains, Theo absorbed all that he could about Recover, and soon he joined the team full time.

Today, Recover operates out of Asheville and the philosophy remains the same, that it can always be better, whether it’s the process or the product. They are always exploring new ways to be more environmentally friendly, more socially beneficial, and produce products that exceed expectations. And daily business meetings are still conducted on those afternoon bike rides.
